What to know about Amana washers

Amana washers are mostly top-load agitator machines built on Whirlpool platforms with simple dial controls. That makes many repairs predictable: a lid lock that stops the cycle, a worn drive coupling or shifter that keeps the machine from agitating or spinning, a drain pump jammed by socks or coins, and suspension rods that let the tub bang during spin. Because these machines are common in rentals and apartments, we often see them overloaded. A visit includes running the built-in diagnostic test, checking the lid lock, pump and drive components, and confirming the machine is level.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Amana. If this washer is still under its factory warranty, contact Amana first.

Where Amana washers usually fail

  • Lid lock flashing and the washer refusing to spin
  • Agitates but will not spin because of a failed shifter
  • Drain pump jammed by a sock or coin
  • Banging during spin from worn suspension rods
  • Slow fill from scaled inlet valve screens

Amana Washer · Las Vegas Valley

Repairing Amana washers in the Las Vegas Valley

The typical Amana washer is a top-loader with a dial, a lid lock and a full-size agitator. Underneath, it borrows its drive, pump and suspension from the larger Whirlpool family, so part supply is rarely the holdup. The challenge is usually that the machine has been worked hard, often by several households over its life.

On a visit we start by hearing the story: did it stop with water in it, refuse to spin, or start shaking? Then we run the built-in test mode, check the lid lock and look at the drive and pump. You get the cause and the price before anything is replaced.

How the agitator drive fails

Most current Amana top-loaders use a motor and gearcase assembly under the tub, plus a shifter that changes between agitate and spin. When the shifter or its actuator fails, the washer gets stuck in one mode. Owners often describe it as "it washes, but the clothes come out soaking".

Older direct-drive Amanas used a rubber coupling between motor and transmission. When it wore out, the motor hummed but the agitator stopped. If you have one of these older machines, the coupling is often the first thing we check.

Overloading and heavy-use laundry rooms

Rental and apartment washers see more bedding, towels and work clothes than a typical family machine. Overloading strains the suspension and the drive. Over months, the tub starts banging into the cabinet during spin.

We replace worn suspension rods as a set and show the user how to load around the agitator instead of packing it. Many repeat calls on Amana washers come from loading habits rather than parts.

What a tenant or owner can check

Confirm the water valves are on, the lid closes fully and the drain hose is not kinked behind the machine. Check the hose screen at the fill valve if water trickles in slowly, since valley water leaves mineral grit there.

Leave the cabinet closed and do not tape over the lid switch. If the tub is full of water, turn off the power and wait for a visit rather than tipping the washer or bailing it into a floor drain.

Repair or replacement for a value washer

Lid locks, pumps, suspension rods and shifters are inexpensive parts on these machines, and the repair usually makes sense. A gearcase or motor costs more but can still be worth doing if the rest of the machine is in good shape.

If the tub is cracked, the cabinet is rusting through or the washer has several failures at once, replacement is often the better value. We will explain the choice.

Still have questions?

We cover 15 ZIP codes in Enterprise, Spring Valley, Paradise and southern Henderson.

On many current Amana top-loaders, the lid lock must engage before the washer spins, so a failed lock or a broken strike on the lid is a frequent cause. A drain problem can also stop the spin, because the washer will not spin with water in the tub. On older models, a worn drive coupling or shifter is common. We run the diagnostic cycle to confirm which part is at fault.

Overloading or an uneven load, especially bulky blankets, is the most common cause. If it bangs with normal loads, worn suspension rods are likely, letting the tub swing into the cabinet. Check that the washer is level and that all four feet are firmly on the floor. Suspension rods are usually replaced as a set so the tub hangs evenly.

Unplug the washer and turn off the water first. Bail out the tub, then check the drain hose for kinks. Small items can slip past the basket and lodge in the pump, and reaching them usually means removing the front panel or tilting the washer, which is safer with two people. If you are not comfortable doing that, we can clear it and check the pump.

It often is. The inlet valve has fine screens where the hoses connect, and minerals and sediment from valley tap water slowly clog them. Turn off the faucets, remove the hoses and look at the screens. If they are crusted over, cleaning them can restore flow. If not, the inlet valve or the water-level sensing may need testing.

Most Amana top-loaders do not have a user-accessible drain filter like a front-loader. Debris that reaches the pump stays there until the pump is accessed from underneath or behind. If the washer stops draining, it is often a sock or small item in the pump, and clearing it requires opening the cabinet with the power off.

A single heavy item, like a bath mat or comforter, can throw the tub off balance during spin. The washer may stop, slow down or bang. Add a few towels to balance it. If loads that are balanced still bang loudly, the suspension parts may be worn.

On older direct-drive models, a humming motor with no agitation often means a worn motor coupling. On newer models, it can point to the shifter, the drive motor or a jammed pump. Turn off the washer to prevent the motor from overheating, and tell us your model when you book.

Using the same model in several units can simplify parts and repairs, but it is not necessary. What matters more is matching the washer to the space, the hookups and the expected use. For older units in good shape, repair is often cheaper than replacement.

Most full-size Amana top-load washers cannot be stacked because the lid opens from the top. A matching dryer sits next to it. If you need a stacked layout in a closet, a laundry center or a front-load pair designed for stacking is the usual solution.
