The most common cause is a burned or greasy waveguide cover, the small panel on the cavity wall where the microwaves enter. Metal trim on dishes, foil or chipped interior paint can also cause sparks. Stop using it if the sparking continues, because arcing can damage the magnetron. Cleaning or replacing the cover often fixes it.
Many over-the-range models have a thermal sensor that starts the vent fan when the cooktop below gets hot, to protect the microwave's electronics. That is normal while you cook. If the fan runs when the cooktop is cold or will not shut off, the sensor or a relay on the control board may have failed.
Often yes. Drawer microwaves and combination speed ovens are expensive to replace and are built into cabinetry, so a repair to a door switch, keypad or magnetron is usually a better value. A basic countertop model is a different story, and we will tell you if replacement makes more sense.
Yes, usually. The keypad is a membrane switch, and its contacts wear or lose connection where the ribbon cable plugs into the control board. Sometimes the board itself is the problem. The technician tests both before quoting, since replacing the keypad alone will not help if the board is at fault.
Usage varies a lot, but many countertop units are replaced within about a decade, while over-the-range and built-in models are designed to stay in service longer. Clean grease filters, avoid running it empty, and do not slam the door, since door switches are a frequent failure point.
No. We are an independent repair company and are not factory-authorized by any manufacturer. If your microwave is still under the manufacturer's warranty, contact the manufacturer first, since work by an independent shop may not be covered. Out-of-warranty microwaves get manufacturer-specified parts by default and a 90-day parts and 30-day labor warranty on the repair.
Microwave repair in the Las Vegas Valley
Microwaves look simple from the outside, but inside sits a high-voltage circuit: a transformer, capacitor, diode and magnetron that produce the heat, guarded by door interlock switches that must all agree before anything runs. Most failures fit into four groups: no heat, arcing in the cavity, door and latch problems, or a dead control panel.
Microwave repair makes the most sense on over-the-range, built-in and drawer models, which are costly to replace and often double as the cooktop's vent hood. Those units take heat and grease from the burners below, which wears fans, lights and switches. For a basic countertop unit, we tell you honestly if a repair is not worth paying for.
Early warnings from the microwave
The most common report is food that stays cold while the turntable spins and the light comes on. Others include blue sparks or popping noises, a loud buzz, a burning smell, keys that respond only when pressed hard, or a unit that shuts off a few seconds into a cycle.
On over-the-range models, owners also notice a vent fan that stops, runs only on one speed or will not shut off.
Components that commonly fail
High-voltage diodes and fuses fail often, and magnetrons wear out with age. Door interlock switches and their monitor switch are frequent culprits, especially after years of hard door slams. Waveguide covers burn through when grease builds up, which leads to arcing. Keypad membranes, control boards, turntable motors and vent fan motors round out the list.
Microwave brands we handle
Over-the-range units from GE, Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid, Maytag and Frigidaire make up much of the work. We also repair Sharp microwave drawers, built-in models from Thermador, Dacor and JennAir, Miele and Gaggenau speed ovens, and Bosch units.
Safe, step-by-step diagnosis
Every visit begins with unplugging the unit and discharging the high-voltage capacitor. The technician then tests the fuse, diode, capacitor, transformer and magnetron, and checks the door switches in the correct order. For over-the-range units, the vent fan and lights are tested too.
We quote one price for parts and labor before starting, and if the unit is not worth repairing, we tell you before you spend money.
