What to know about Hotpoint microwaves

Hotpoint microwaves are simple countertop and over-the-range models, the latter combining a microwave with a vent hood and a cooktop light. Common faults include no heat from a failed magnetron, diode or capacitor, door switches that blow the internal fuse, worn latch hooks that keep the door from closing firmly, and vent fans slowed by grease. Because over-the-range models hang on a wall plate above the stove, taking one down safely takes two people. We discharge the high-voltage parts before testing, then check the door system, fuse and heating components.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Hotpoint. If this microwave is still under its factory warranty, contact Hotpoint first.

Where Hotpoint microwaves usually fail

  • Broken door latch hooks so the door will not stay shut
  • Internal fuse blown by a misaligned door switch
  • Grease-clogged vent fan running slowly or noisily
  • Cooktop light under the over-the-range unit not working
  • Magnetron failure leaving food cold after a full cycle

Repairing Hotpoint microwaves in the Las Vegas Valley

Hotpoint microwaves come in two forms: simple countertop units and over-the-range models that combine a microwave with a vent fan and cooktop light. Countertop units are often cheaper to replace than repair. Over-the-range models are different, because they are mounted to the wall and cabinet and serve as the kitchen's vent hood.

That makes repair more attractive for over-the-range units, especially in rental homes where a matching replacement must fit the existing wall plate and cabinet opening. Wall plates differ between models, and a new unit may need new holes in the cabinet above. Repairing the existing unit avoids that. It also keeps the vent ducting, which may run through the cabinet or outside, in place without changes.

High-voltage faults

A microwave that runs but does not heat usually has a failed magnetron, high-voltage diode, capacitor or transformer. These parts carry dangerous voltage, and the capacitor holds a charge after the unit is unplugged. We discharge it before testing, and we never recommend owners open the case.

Door latches and blown fuses

A Hotpoint microwave door uses latch hooks that operate several interlock switches in sequence. When the hooks wear or the door sags, the switches may close in the wrong order and blow an internal fuse. The microwave then looks completely dead. We replace the fuse, test the switches and fix the latch so the fuse does not blow again.

Over-the-range vent and light

The vent fan on an over-the-range Hotpoint pulls steam and grease up from the cooktop. Grease buildup on the filters and fan slows it down and can make it noisy.

The cooktop light uses its own bulbs and socket, and a dead light is often just a bulb.

Recirculating installations also use a charcoal filter behind the top grille. It loads up over time and stops trapping cooking odors, which owners sometimes mistake for a weak fan. It is a replacement item rather than a repair, and the manual lists how often to change it. A fan that rattles or slows even with clean filters usually has a worn motor.

Filters, bulbs and the door

Clean the grease filters under the microwave with hot soapy water. Check that the door closes firmly without catching. Replace the cooktop light bulbs with the correct type.

Do not remove the outer case, and do not try to take an over-the-range microwave down by yourself.

Countertop versus over-the-range economics

Door switches, latches, fans and lights are reasonable repairs. A magnetron failure on an older countertop unit often makes replacement the better value. On over-the-range models, the mounting and fit can tip the decision toward repair.

Usually, yes. The plastic latch hooks on the door can break or wear, and then the door does not engage the safety switches, so the microwave will not start. Replacing the latch hooks or the door is a common repair. Never try to bypass the door switches, because they keep microwave energy inside the cavity.

Many over-the-range models have a thermal sensor that switches on the vent fan automatically when the cooktop below gets hot, to protect the microwave's electronics. If the fan runs when the cooktop is off and cool, the sensor may be failing, or the control may need a reset by turning off the breaker for a minute.

Slide the metal filters out from the underside of the microwave and soak them in hot water with a degreasing dish soap, then scrub gently and rinse. Many are dishwasher-safe. Clean them monthly if you cook often. Clogged filters reduce venting and make the fan motor work harder.

A steady, low hum while cooking is normal. A loud buzz, rattle or grinding noise is not. Rattling can come from the stirrer or the fan, while a loud buzz with no heating often points to the magnetron or other high-voltage parts. Stop using it and have it checked.

No heat usually means a failure in the high-voltage circuit, such as the magnetron, diode or capacitor. We discharge the capacitor before testing, then replace the failed part. On an older countertop model, the cost of a magnetron may approach the price of a new unit.

Yes, the cooktop lights and often the interior light can be replaced by owners. Use the correct bulb type and wattage listed in the manual. The light cover under the unit usually slides or unscrews. If a new bulb does not light, the socket or switch may need repair.

Many Hotpoint over-the-range models can be set up either way, using a charcoal filter for recirculation or a duct to the outside. Changing the setup involves turning the blower and adding ductwork, which is usually an installation job rather than a repair. We can tell you how yours is set up during a visit.

No. A cracked door or damaged seal can let microwave energy escape. Stop using it until the door is repaired or the unit replaced. Do not try to repair the door seal or glass yourself. Microwave doors are part of the safety system.

The installation guide specifies a minimum distance between the cooktop and the bottom of the microwave. If your unit was installed lower than that, heat and steam from the burners can damage the controls, the door and the underside of the cabinet. We can measure the gap during a visit and explain the options if it is too tight.
