How a Repair Visit Works
What to know about Frigidaire microwaves
Frigidaire microwaves are mostly over-the-range models with a built-in vent hood, plus countertop units and built-in drawer or trim-kit models in some kitchens. Over-the-range units often fail at the door switches, the high-voltage diode or the magnetron, and their vent fans and cooktop lights take a beating from steam and grease. Touchpads can stop responding after years of heat from the range below. We do not open the high-voltage section without discharging the capacitor safely. A visit includes testing the heat output, door switches and vent operation before we quote.
TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Frigidaire. If this microwave is still under its factory warranty, contact Frigidaire first.
Where Frigidaire microwaves usually fail
- Microwave hums loudly but does not heat the food
- Door switch fails and the microwave starts and stops
- Vent hood fan motor seizes from grease buildup
- Cooktop light under the microwave stops working
- Touchpad buttons fail after years of heat from below

Repairing Frigidaire microwaves in the Las Vegas Valley
Most Frigidaire microwaves we service are over-the-range models mounted above a range, with an integrated vent fan, grease filters and a cooktop light. We also see countertop units, and built-in models installed with trim kits in Gallery kitchens where the microwave sits in a wall cabinet or above a wall oven.
Over-the-range units work in a harsh spot: heat, steam and grease rise from the cooktop directly into them. That affects the controls, the fan and the filters, and it shapes how we approach the diagnosis. A failed vent fan on an over-the-range unit is a bigger deal than it sounds, since the microwave relies on that airflow to protect itself from cooktop heat.
Over-the-range microwave construction
An over-the-range microwave hangs on a wall plate and is bolted through the cabinet above. It contains the magnetron and high-voltage parts, a vent fan that can exhaust outside or recirculate, and a light for the cooktop below.
Removing one is a two-person job, so we plan whether the repair can be done in place or requires taking it down. Many door switch and vent fan repairs can be done without removing it.
Common symptoms and causes
A microwave that runs and turns but does not heat often has a failed magnetron, diode or capacitor. A unit that is completely dead may have blown its internal fuse, usually because a door switch failed.
Vent fans that rattle or run slowly usually have grease on the blades or a worn motor. Touch controls that stop responding can be affected by heat from the range below, especially after years of use.
Safety first with microwaves
Microwaves store high voltage in the capacitor even when unplugged, so owners should not open the cabinet. Safe checks include confirming the outlet has power, cleaning the grease filters and looking for damage to the waveguide cover inside the cavity.
If you see sparks or smell burning, stop the microwave and unplug it. We discharge the capacitor safely before testing any internal part.
Repair or replace
Over-the-range and built-in microwaves are worth repairing more often than countertop units, because replacement involves mounting, trim kits and possibly cabinet changes. Door switches, fans and lights are usually economical repairs.
A magnetron on an older countertop model may cost nearly as much as a new microwave, and we will say so. For built-ins, we compare the repair with the cost of a matching replacement.

A loud hum with no heating commonly points to a failed high-voltage diode or capacitor, or a shorted magnetron. These parts carry dangerous voltage even when unplugged, so do not open the cabinet yourself. We discharge the system, test each component and replace only what failed.
The door uses several interlock switches. If one is worn or the door latch is misaligned, slight pressure on the door can break the circuit and stop the cycle. Do not bypass the switches. We replace the worn switch and check the door alignment so it closes properly.
On many models the vent fan can only be reached by taking the microwave off its mounting plate, which takes two people. We handle the removal and reinstallation. Before the visit, clear the cabinet above the microwave, since the mounting bolts usually come through from there.
For a basic countertop model, repair is often not worthwhile unless the problem is simple, such as a fuse or door switch. Over-the-range and built-in models are different, because replacement involves mounting, venting and matching the cabinet opening. We can advise on which makes sense once we know the fault.
Many over-the-range models have a heat sensor that turns on the fan automatically when the cooktop below gets hot. That protects the electronics, and the fan may keep running for a while after the burners go off. If the fan runs when the cooktop has been cold for hours, or will not shut off with the button, the sensor or control may be faulty.
The turntable motor or the coupler under the tray may have failed. Make sure the glass tray and the roller ring are seated correctly first, and clear any food under the ring. If they are seated and the tray still sits still, the motor needs testing. It is a modest repair, and the microwave can still heat in the meantime.
Usually yes. The cooktop light is accessed from below, and the bulb can be replaced by the owner after unplugging the microwave. Use the bulb type listed in the owner's manual, since the wrong wattage can overheat the socket. If a new bulb does not work, the socket, the switch or the control may be at fault.
Yes. The grease filters under the microwave should be cleaned regularly in warm, soapy water. A clogged filter makes the fan noisy and less effective. Charcoal filters for recirculating models are replaced rather than cleaned, typically every several months depending on how much you cook.
Many models can be set up either way by repositioning the blower, but it depends on whether a duct runs through the wall or the cabinet above. Without a duct, the microwave has to recirculate through a charcoal filter. We can check the installation and tell you which option your kitchen supports.
