What to know about GE Appliances microwaves

Most GE microwaves we see are over-the-range units above a cooktop, including Profile convection models and Advantium speed ovens. Typical faults are a microwave that runs but doesn't heat, which can be a magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor; a turntable that stops; door switches that fail and blow the main fuse; and a vent fan or light that quits. High-voltage parts hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged, so this is not a do-it-yourself job. We test the circuit safely and quote one price, and we'll tell you when replacement is the better value.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with GE Appliances. If this microwave is still under its factory warranty, contact GE Appliances first.

Where GE Appliances microwaves usually fail

  • Microwave runs and turns but food stays cold
  • Door switch failure blows the main fuse repeatedly
  • Turntable motor stops and the plate no longer rotates
  • Over-the-range vent fan becomes noisy or stops working
  • Advantium speed cook halogen lamps burn out over time

GE Appliances Microwave · Las Vegas Valley

Repairing GE Appliances microwaves in the Las Vegas Valley

Most GE microwaves in valley kitchens hang over the range and double as a vent hood, with a fan and lights underneath. That means a GE microwave has two jobs, and a failure in either one gets noticed fast. Higher-end kitchens may have a built-in GE or Monogram unit in a wall cabinet, or an Advantium that replaces a second oven.

Repair on these units always starts with safety. The high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge after the unit is unplugged, so internal testing is not an owner task. Our technician discharges the circuit before touching anything, then works through the door switches, fuse, diode, capacitor and magnetron in a set order.

Over-the-range models and the vent

The vent fan in an over-the-range GE pulls air from under the microwave and sends it outside or back into the room through a charcoal filter. Grease filters underneath need regular cleaning, and a clogged filter makes the fan loud and weak.

Some models turn the fan on automatically when they sense heat from the cooktop below. That is normal and not a fault.

Advantium speed ovens

GE Advantium units combine microwave power with halogen lamps and, on some models, convection. When speed cooking fails, the lamp, the lamp circuit or a related control may be at fault while plain microwaving still works.

Advantium parts are specific to the model and less common, so a repair may need ordering.

Because an Advantium often replaces a second wall oven, losing it during a busy week hurts. We confirm the failed part on the first visit so the order can go in right away.

Safe owner checks

Check the breaker, try a different program and confirm the child lock is off. Clean the grease filters and the area under the unit. For a dead light, the bulb can be replaced from below on many models.

Do not remove the cabinet cover or touch internal parts. If the microwave sparks with nothing metal inside, stop using it.

When to repair and when to replace

Door switches, fuses, turntable motors, fans and lights are moderate repairs. A magnetron or control board on a basic countertop or over-the-range model may cost close to a replacement, especially once installation is included.

Over-the-range models take time to remove and hang, so repair often comes out ahead when the fault is a single part.

A replacement also has to match the wall plate, cabinet height and vent direction of the old one, which is not always easy with a newer model. Repairing the unit you already have avoids that fitting work entirely.

When the light, fan and turntable work but nothing heats, the high-voltage circuit is the usual suspect: the magnetron, the high-voltage diode or the capacitor. Those parts can hold a lethal charge even when unplugged, so do not open the cabinet. A technician can discharge and test them safely.

Often, yes, because removing and reinstalling an over-the-range unit adds work to any replacement. Door switches, fuses and fans are moderate repairs. If the magnetron and control board have both failed on an older unit, replacement may make more sense, and we will tell you plainly.

Advantium models use halogen lamps for speed cooking along with microwave energy. If the speed cook mode is weak or uneven, a burned-out lamp is a common cause. Confirm the door closes fully and the microwave mode still heats. Lamp and lamp-socket repairs are best done by a technician.

A fuse that blows when the door opens or closes usually points to a failed door interlock switch or a misaligned latch. Replacing the fuse alone will not fix it. Unplug the microwave and have the switches tested, because the interlocks are a safety system that must work correctly.

Many GE over-the-range microwaves have a sensor that switches on the vent fan when heat from the cooktop below gets high. The fan may keep running after you finish cooking until the area cools. If the fan runs constantly with the cooktop off, the sensor or control may need checking.

Yes. Recirculating models use a charcoal filter behind the top vent grille, which is replaced rather than cleaned, typically every several months depending on use. The metal grease filters underneath can be washed. Both are owner tasks, and neither requires opening the cabinet.

A loud hum with no heat can point to a failing magnetron, diode or capacitor. Stop using it, since continuing can damage other parts or overheat the unit. Do not open the cabinet. We discharge and test the high-voltage parts safely during the visit.

Removing one typically means unplugging it, removing the top cabinet bolts and lowering it off the wall plate, which takes two people. Some repairs need that, and many do not. We try to work with it mounted when the part is reachable.

Some turntable motors can rotate in either direction, and changing direction is normal. A turntable that jerks, stops or grinds may have a worn motor, a dirty roller ring or a cracked coupler. Clean the roller ring and reseat the glass tray first.
