What to know about Thermador microwaves

Thermador microwaves are built-in models: microwave drawers that install below a counter or in an island, built-in microwaves with trim kits, and speed ovens that combine microwave and convection cooking in a wall oven configuration. Drawer models have a motorized slide, so drawer drive and track faults are common alongside normal heating problems. Speed ovens add convection elements and fans to diagnose. We test the high-voltage system safely, check the drawer mechanism or convection parts, and protect the surrounding cabinetry. Because these units are built in, repair is usually the better value.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Thermador. If this microwave is still under its factory warranty, contact Thermador first.

  • Microwave drawer stalling partway open or closed
  • Drawer drive motor or gear rack worn or blocked
  • No heat from a failed magnetron or high-voltage part

Repairing Thermador microwaves in the Las Vegas Valley

Thermador microwaves are all built-in. The microwave drawer installs below a counter or in an island and opens with a motorized slide. Built-in microwaves sit in a wall or cabinet with a trim kit, often above a wall oven. Speed ovens combine microwave power with a convection element and fan, so one cavity can bake, roast and reheat.

Because none of these sit on a counter, a failure takes a visible piece of the kitchen out of service, and replacement means matching an opening and a finish. That is why we focus on finding the specific failed part. Most Thermador microwave faults involve one component, not the whole appliance.

The drawer mechanism

A Thermador microwave drawer uses a drive motor, a gear rack and sensors that tell the control where the drawer is. If something blocks it, the control stops or reverses the drawer to avoid damage. Crumbs in the tracks, a dish that sits too high, or a worn gear can all cause stalls.

If the drawer will not move at all, the motor, gear or a control signal may have failed. We test each part of that chain.

Heating and the high-voltage system

Microwave heating comes from a magnetron powered by a transformer, capacitor and diode. If the unit runs and lights but does not heat, one of those parts or a high-voltage fuse has usually failed. These components store dangerous energy and are only handled after proper discharge.

Speed ovens also have a convection element, a fan and temperature sensors. If microwave mode works but convection does not, those parts are tested next.

What you can safely check

Clean the drawer track and remove anything sitting near the rails. Check the control panel for a lock setting. Make sure the breaker for the microwave or speed oven is on. On a speed oven, try both microwave and convection modes and note which one fails.

Do not remove a built-in microwave from its trim kit or open its cabinet. The capacitor can hold a charge long after power is off, and the unit is heavy.

Repair value for built-in microwaves

Drawer motors, gear racks, sensors, door switches, magnetrons and convection parts are reasonable repairs on a Thermador. Control boards cost more but are often worth it when the rest of the unit is sound. We confirm parts availability for your model before quoting.

Replacing a built-in model means matching the cutout and trim, which often makes repair the better value.

Thermador Microwave Repair Questions

Still have questions?

We cover 15 ZIP codes in Enterprise, Spring Valley, Paradise and southern Henderson.

The drawer stops when it senses resistance, so food debris in the track, a misaligned drawer or a worn gear can trigger it. Clean the track and make sure nothing is caught. If the drawer still stalls, the drive motor, gear rack or position sensor may need testing and replacement.

Speed ovens use separate parts for microwave and convection cooking. If microwave mode works but convection does not, the convection element, fan or a thermal fuse is often the cause. Those parts are tested separately, and the repair is usually much simpler than a high-voltage repair.

We do not recommend it. Built-in units are anchored in the cabinet with trim kits and may be heavy, and the high-voltage components can hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged. A technician can safely remove, test and reinstall the unit while protecting the cabinetry.

Turn off the breaker for the microwave for a minute, then restore power. This clears many temporary control glitches. If the panel still does not respond or the unit stops again, the control board or a door switch may have failed and should be tested by a technician.

Most built-in microwaves and drawers call for a dedicated circuit, and the installation guide lists the requirement for your model. Sharing a circuit with a dishwasher or other appliance can trip the breaker or cause the control to reset. If your drawer trips the breaker on its own, the unit itself needs testing.

Speed ovens balance microwave and convection heat, and recipes written for a standard oven do not always match. If cook times have grown longer than they used to be on the same settings, the convection element, fan or magnetron output may be weakening. We test both heating systems separately to find which one dropped.

It can be. Food residue can smoke, but a sharp electrical smell, smoke from the vents or a smell when the unit is idle should be taken seriously. Turn off the breaker and do not use the microwave until it is checked.

Wipe the cavity and drawer tracks regularly with a damp cloth and a mild cleaner, and dry them afterward. Avoid harsh abrasives that can scratch the cavity or wear the coating. Keep crumbs and spills out of the tracks, because debris can block the drawer and wear the gear rack over time.

Internal parts such as switches, magnetrons, motors and boards do not change the appearance. Trim kits, handles and control panels must match your model and finish, so we order them by model and serial number. If a cosmetic part is discontinued, we tell you before ordering so there are no surprises.
