What to know about Smeg microwaves
Smeg microwaves are mainly built-in units, including combination microwave ovens and speed ovens in Smeg's design lines, installed in a wall stack or tall cabinet. Some add convection and grill elements, so faults go beyond the usual no-heat problem: grill elements fail, convection fans stop, and touch or rotary controls wear. The high-voltage circuit can still fail at the magnetron, transformer or door interlocks. We test safely, discharge stored voltage, check the installation and give one price, noting if the unit must come out of the cabinet.
TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Smeg. If this microwave is still under its factory warranty, contact Smeg first.
Where Smeg microwaves usually fail
- Combination microwave grill element stops heating
- Convection fan fails in speed oven mode
- Door interlock switch fails and the unit won't start
- Magnetron failure leaves food cold on microwave mode
- Rotary control knob wears and settings won't hold

Repairing Smeg microwaves in the Las Vegas Valley
Smeg's microwaves in the US are mostly built-in models designed to line up with Smeg wall ovens in a tall cabinet or a stacked column. Many are combination units that add a grill element and, on some models, a convection fan and element, so the appliance doubles as a compact second oven.
That versatility is useful in a kitchen, and it also makes diagnosis more precise. Microwave power, grill and convection each use separate components, so knowing exactly which function stopped narrows the search quickly and keeps us from replacing parts that are fine. We test each function separately before quoting. That keeps the bill limited to the part that actually failed.
The high-voltage side
Microwave heating depends on a magnetron, a high-voltage transformer, a capacitor and a diode. A failure in any of them stops microwave heating, even though the light, turntable and fan still work. These parts carry dangerous voltage and the capacitor holds a charge after the unit is unplugged, so we discharge it before testing.
Grill and convection elements
The grill element sits in the top of the cavity and browns food. When it fails, microwave cooking may still work, but nothing crisps. On convection models, a fan and element at the back heat the cavity like a small oven. Either can fail on its own, and both can be tested and replaced without touching the microwave circuit.
Door switches, controls and cooling
Built-in Smeg microwaves use several door interlock switches that must close in the right order before the unit will start. A door that has dropped slightly on its hinges, or a worn latch, can stop the unit from starting or blow an internal fuse. Touch and rotary controls also wear with use and may stop responding.
A built-in microwave depends on its cooling fan and the air gaps around it in the cabinet. If the trim was installed without the right gap, or the fan has slowed, the unit can overheat and stop mid-cycle. We check the fan and the installation and explain if the cabinet needs adjustment.
What owners can do first
Check the breaker, make sure the door closes firmly and note which functions work and which do not. Look for messages on the display and whether the turntable turns.
Do not remove the cabinet trim or outer case. High voltage remains inside even after the unit is unplugged, and the trim is easy to damage.
Repair or replace a built-in combination unit
Door switches, grill elements, fans and controls are usually worth repairing on a built-in Smeg, since a replacement must fit the same opening and match the oven nearby. A magnetron or transformer failure on an older unit warrants a cost comparison. We confirm part availability through Smeg's distribution before you approve.

Combination units use a separate grill element for browning. If microwave mode works but grill mode doesn't heat, that element or its control circuit has likely failed. It's a separate repair from the high-voltage microwave system and is often more straightforward.
Built-in Smeg microwaves are fitted into cabinetry and matched to other appliances, so replacing one can involve trim and design changes. Repairs like door switches, grill elements and fans are often worthwhile. We explain the full cost before any work.
Speed ovens combine microwave power with convection heat. If one system weakens, such as a failing convection fan or a weak magnetron, cooking slows down. We test both systems, because the cause isn't always obvious from the symptom alone, then explain what we found.
Some repairs, like door adjustments, can be done in place. Most internal repairs require sliding the unit out of its cabinet, which we do carefully to protect trim and surrounding finishes. We let you know beforehand if removal is required.
Not in normal use, but frequent grilling at high settings, splatter on the element and running grill mode with the cavity dirty all shorten its life. Wipe the cavity after greasy cooking and use the splatter cover in microwave mode. If the element stops glowing, it is a moderate repair that does not involve the microwave circuit.
In grill or convection-only modes, metal bakeware is usually fine. In microwave or combination modes, follow the manual closely, since some metal causes arcing. If you see sparks, stop and have the cavity inspected. Use the rack supplied with the unit.
Make sure the glass plate sits on its coupler and the roller ring is clean and in place. If it still does not turn, the turntable motor may have failed. It is a common, moderate repair. Check for food debris under the plate.
Power is reaching the unit, so the issue is likely in the high-voltage circuit or a door interlock switch. Both need safe testing with the capacitor discharged. Do not try to open the case yourself. These parts can fail with no warning.
Many Smeg controls reset after a power interruption and need the clock set before they will work normally. If an error stays after setting the clock, note the code and book a test. A persistent code helps us find the cause.
