Nearly always the thermocouple circuit. The probe beside each burner generates a tiny current when the flame heats it, and that current holds the valve open. Grime on the probe, a probe knocked out of the flame during cleaning, or a worn thermocouple breaks that signal. We test the circuit and clean, reposition or replace the thermocouple.

FAB gaskets can harden or pull away over time, and the rounded door can sag on its hinges. Either one lets warm air in, which shows up as frost in the freezer compartment or a fridge that runs constantly. Check for visible gaps. We replace the gasket and adjust or replace the hinge so the door closes evenly.

Fan baking draws on a ring-shaped element that circles the rear fan and works independently of the top and bottom elements. When that ring element burns out, fan modes fail while conventional modes still heat. A worn selector switch can cause similar symptoms, so we test both before deciding which to replace.

The door is counterbalanced by springs or cables on each side, and once they stretch or snap, it swings down hard. Panel-ready models carry extra weight, so the wear comes sooner. Fitting new springs or cables and setting the tension to match the door brings back a controlled open and close.

The rating plate is usually on the oven door frame, inside the refrigerator compartment, or on the edge of the dishwasher door. It lists the model code and serial number. Sharing it when you book lets us check part availability before the visit.

No. TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company with no affiliation to Smeg. If your Smeg is still under the manufacturer's warranty, contact Smeg first, because work by an independent shop may not be covered by that warranty. Once it is out of warranty, or if the warranty route does not work for you, we are glad to take a look.

Smeg · Las Vegas Valley

Servicing Smeg in the Las Vegas Valley

Smeg comes from Italy, and design is the point: the rounded FAB refrigerators that recall the 1950s, the Portofino, Victoria and Opera ranges in bold enamel colors, and built-in ovens with a distinctly European look. Owners often choose them for a remodeled kitchen or a condo where the appliance is meant to be seen, and many pieces are built in or take a custom panel.

The engineering is European too. Gas burners have a thermocouple safety at every burner, and the ovens are mostly fan-assisted multifunction designs rather than the bake-and-broil layout common in American ranges. For Smeg repair we read the model code off the rating plate, diagnose on site, and let you know early if a part is coming from overseas.

European conventions that change the diagnosis

Each Smeg gas burner has a thermocouple that holds its valve open for as long as it senses flame. A burner that lights and then dies as you let go of the knob is therefore almost always a thermocouple circuit fault. In the oven, fan baking uses a ring element wrapped around the rear fan, independent of the top and bottom elements, so one function can fail while the others still heat.

Many ovens use rotary selector switches, and some run a pyrolytic self-clean that is hard on door locks. FAB refrigerators are simple thermostat-controlled units where gaskets and hinges are the usual weak points.

Smeg appliances we work on

Refrigerators: FAB gaskets that harden, thermostats that stop cycling, sagging hinges on the rounded doors, and freezer compartments that frost heavily. Dishwashers: clogged filters, humming drain pumps, heavy doors from worn springs or cables, and scale on spray arms. Wine coolers: warm zones, fogged glass doors and noisy fans.

Ovens, ranges, stoves and cooktops: burned-out fan elements, worn selector switches, cooling fans, pyrolytic door locks, thermocouples, spark generators, triple-ring wok burners and induction zone errors. Microwaves: combination grill elements, convection fans, door interlocks and magnetrons.

Smart checks before booking

On a gas burner that will not stay lit, keep the knob pressed for a full five seconds after ignition and make sure the crown and cap sit flat. On a FAB fridge, run a hand around the gasket and look for gaps. On a dishwasher, lift out the filter cylinder and rinse it under the tap.

The rating plate (often on the oven door frame or inside the fridge) lists the model code we need. Sending it ahead lets us check part availability before the visit, which can save a second trip.

Should a Smeg be repaired?

Smeg appliances are chosen for looks and often fitted to a specific space or color scheme, so repair usually wins over replacement. Gaskets, thermostats, elements, switches and thermocouples are all worthwhile repairs. Lead time on ordered parts is the main tradeoff, and we give you the expected timing along with the price.
