What to know about Smeg cooktops

Smeg cooktops include gas hobs with cast iron grates and induction models, sometimes in widths beyond the usual 30 inches. Gas versions use flame-failure devices, where a thermocouple at each burner keeps the gas valve open only while a flame is present, so a burner that lights but goes out when the knob is released usually points to that circuit. Induction units can fail at power boards, cooling fans or touch controls. We test each burner or zone, check the thermocouple and spark circuits, and give one price.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Smeg. If this cooktop is still under its factory warranty, contact Smeg first.

Where Smeg cooktops usually fail

  • Burner goes out as soon as the gas knob is released
  • Thermocouple tip bends away from the flame and fails
  • Spark generator stops and no burner will light
  • Induction zone shows an error from overheating
  • Touch slider controls stop responding on induction models

Repairing Smeg cooktops in the Las Vegas Valley

Smeg cooktops come in gas and induction versions, often in widths and styles that match its ovens and ranges. Gas models use cast iron pan supports, brass or aluminum burner crowns, and a flame-failure safety device on each burner. Induction models rely on power electronics, coils and touch controls under a glass surface.

The two types share almost nothing mechanically, so the first step is identifying which you have and the exact model code. That determines which parts we test and which parts we may need to order. Some parts come from Smeg's own distribution, so the model code also tells us the likely wait.

Flame-failure devices on Smeg gas hobs

European gas hobs like Smeg's use a thermocouple at each burner. When you push and turn a knob, gas flows and the spark lights it. Holding the knob in for a few seconds lets the thermocouple heat up and hold the valve open. If the thermocouple is dirty, bent or failing, the burner goes out when you release the knob.

Spark ignition on many models is triggered by pushing the knob in. A spark generator shared by all burners can fail and stop every burner from sparking at once.

Induction faults and kitchen heat

Induction cooktops need airflow underneath to cool their electronics. In a cabinet with a drawer or stored items pressed against the cooktop's underside, or in a kitchen that gets very hot in summer, the cooktop may reduce power or shut a zone off. Error codes often point to overheating, pan detection or a power module. Pan size matters too; a small pan on a large zone may not register.

We check airflow, supply voltage and the power module before replacing any part.

Burner and zone checks at home

On gas models, remove the crowns and caps, clean and dry them fully, and reseat them precisely. Make sure the tip of each thermocouple is not bent away from the flame. On induction, test with a pan a magnet sticks to firmly, and clear anything stored right under the cooktop.

Do not remove the cooktop from the counter or loosen the gas connection, and never adjust gas valves yourself. If you smell gas with the burners off, shut the supply off, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.

Thermocouples, modules and costs

Thermocouples, spark electrodes, spark generators, knobs and burner parts are inexpensive repairs on a Smeg gas hob. Induction modules, coils and glass are more costly, and we price those against replacement. Smeg parts may need to be ordered, and we give you the expected timing before you approve.

Smeg gas burners have a flame-failure safety device. You hold the knob in for several seconds so the thermocouple heats and holds the valve open. If the flame still goes out after holding, the thermocouple may be bent, dirty or failed, and needs testing.

Check your manual, but cast iron is usually best cleaned by hand with warm soapy water and dried immediately. Dishwasher detergents can dull or damage enamel coatings. Keep grates seated correctly so burner caps and thermocouples aren't knocked out of position.

Make sure cookware is magnetic and centered, and that the control area is dry and clean. Many induction hobs stop if they detect overheating or a spill on the controls. Reset power at the breaker if needed. If the error persists, a board or fan test is necessary.

Some Smeg parts are not stocked locally and must be ordered by model code, so timelines vary. We diagnose first, confirm the exact part, and tell you the expected wait before you approve. Common items like thermocouples and spark electrodes are often easier to source.

Repeated attempts usually mean the spark is weak, the electrode is cracked or dirty, or the burner crown is not seated so gas reaches the spark unevenly. Clean and dry the crown and electrode first. If ignition is still slow, the spark generator or electrode should be tested and replaced.

Light marks and residue usually come off with a ceramic cooktop cleaner and a scraper held flat. Deep scratches cannot be polished out, but they are cosmetic unless they turn into chips or cracks. Any crack means the cooktop should not be used until the glass is replaced.

Yes, cast iron works well on induction. Lift it rather than sliding it, since rough bottoms can scratch the glass. Heavy cast iron dropped on the surface can crack it. Cast iron is also heavy, so set it down gently.

Check that the burner crown and cap are seated correctly and that the ports are clean. A partly blocked orifice or a valve problem can also reduce the flame. If cleaning does not help, the burner needs testing. Do not enlarge the ports with tools.

Yes. Gas cooktops require a proper connection and leak test, and conversion to propane needs the correct injectors and adjustment. Induction models need the correct circuit. We handle conversions and repairs, but installation from scratch is outside a repair visit.
