What to know about Thermador cooktops
Thermador cooktops include gas cooktops and professional rangetops with the Star Burner, a star-shaped burner with more flame ports for more even heat, along with induction cooktops, including Freedom Induction models that detect cookware anywhere on the surface. Gas models use ExtraLow simmering on some burners, which cycles the flame on and off at very low settings and depends on reliable reignition. Common faults are igniters, spark modules, switches, and reignition problems. Induction models can have power board, cooling fan and sensor faults. We test ignition or power electronics and check ventilation before quoting.
TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Thermador. If this cooktop is still under its factory warranty, contact Thermador first.
Where Thermador cooktops usually fail
- Star Burner not lighting evenly around all points
- ExtraLow burner not cycling or reigniting properly
- Spark module clicking constantly after moisture exposure
- Freedom Induction surface not detecting cookware
- Induction cooling fan noisy or failing under the glass

Repairing Thermador cooktops in the Las Vegas Valley
Thermador cooktops span two very different technologies. Gas cooktops and professional rangetops use the patented Star Burner, a five-pointed burner that spreads more flame ports around a larger perimeter, with ExtraLow simmer on selected burners. Induction cooktops, including the Freedom Induction line, use coils and power electronics under a single glass surface that can detect a pan almost anywhere.
The diagnosis for each could not be more different. A gas fault is usually about spark, flame and gas flow at one burner. An induction fault is usually about heat management, cookware and the boards that drive the coils. We confirm which system you have, and which model and serial number, before talking about parts or price.
Star Burners and ExtraLow simmer
The star shape puts flame closer to the edge of the pan, which gives even heat, but the points have small ports that clog with boil-overs. A Star Burner with one dark point usually has debris in that section or a cap that is slightly rotated.
ExtraLow works by turning the flame off and on at a very low setting, relighting it each time. That makes the burner depend on reliable reignition. If a burner clicks often at low heat, the electrode, the switch or the module may be failing, or the burner may simply need cleaning.
Freedom Induction and standard induction tops
Freedom Induction uses many small coils so a pan can sit anywhere, and the control maps where it is. When a pan is not detected, the cause can be cookware that is not magnetic enough, a sensor fault or a failing board. Standard induction tops work zone by zone.
Both rely on cooling fans and clear airflow below the cooktop. A blocked vent or a drawer pressed against the housing can make zones throttle back or shut off.
Simple checks for owners
On gas, remove the caps and burner heads when cool, wash and dry them, then reseat them flat and aligned. On induction, test a zone with a heavy pan that a magnet sticks to firmly. Check the cabinet under the cooktop for blocked vents.
Never spray cleaner into gas burner bases or under the knobs. If the glass is cracked, stop using it and switch off the breaker. If you smell gas with burners off, shut off the supply and leave.
What a Thermador cooktop repair involves
Gas work commonly means replacing an electrode, a switch or a spark module, and confirming gas pressure at the burners. Induction work may involve fans, sensors or power boards, which we source for your exact model. Glass tops are usually replaced as a top assembly.
A Thermador cooktop is worth repairing in most cases, because it fits a specific cutout and replacement means matching the opening and finish.

ExtraLow deliberately cycles the flame on and off to hold a very low temperature, and the igniter relights it each time, so some clicking is normal. If it clicks constantly without lighting, or the flame does not return, the igniter, the switch or the control module may need testing.
Let it cool, remove the grate and cap, and clean the burner with a soft brush and mild soap, keeping water away from the igniter. Clear the star points' ports gently with a paper clip, never a toothpick that could break off. Let everything dry fully before relighting to avoid ignition faults.
Induction needs magnetic cookware. If a magnet sticks firmly to the bottom, the pan should work. Freedom Induction can detect pans of different sizes and shapes, but very small, warped or thin pans may not register. If good cookware stops being detected, the board or sensors should be checked.
It is usually moisture in a switch or around the igniter. Turn off the burners and let the area dry completely, which can take a day. If sparking continues after drying, the switch or spark module likely needs replacement. If you smell gas, turn off the supply and leave before calling for help.
Each arm of the star has its own row of small ports, and a boil-over can clog one arm while the others stay clear. A cap rotated off its locating notch has a similar effect. With the burner cool, lift the cap, clear the ports in that arm with a straight pin, dry it and reseat the cap until it sits flat.
Yes. ExtraLow lowers the average heat by turning the flame on and off on a timed pattern, relighting it each time. You may hear the igniter click as it relights. If the flame fails to relight, stays off or clicks constantly, the electrode, switch or module should be checked.
The pan may not be magnetic enough or may be too small for the coils to detect. Check with a magnet and try a heavier pan. If several induction-ready pans are not detected on one area of the surface, a sensor or board may be at fault and should be tested.
Many repairs, including igniters, burners and switches, can be done in place by removing grates, caps and the top panel. Some valve or wiring work requires lifting or sliding the unit. We check access before starting and protect the counter and backsplash.
Beeping and shutdown can mean overheating, a pan removed, a spill on the controls or a fault code. Wipe the controls, check ventilation and try again. If it continues, note the code and book a visit so the fan, sensors and boards can be tested.
