How a Repair Visit Works
What to know about Kenmore cooktops
Kenmore cooktops include gas, radiant smoothtop and induction models, and many were built by Frigidaire or Whirlpool. Gas cooktops often develop clicking igniters, uneven flames, or a spark module that stops working. Radiant tops typically lose an element, a dual-zone switch, or the hot-surface indicator light, and the glass can crack from impact or heat. Induction tops can show a zone that does not detect pans or a cooling fan problem. On a visit we confirm the maker from the model number, test switches and elements or igniters, and check gas connections before quoting the repair.
TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Kenmore. If this cooktop is still under its factory warranty, contact Kenmore first.
Where Kenmore cooktops usually fail
- Dual-zone radiant element heats only the inner ring
- Hot surface light stays on after the cooktop cools
- Spark module ticks with no spark at one burner
- Induction zone shuts off mid-use with a fan error
- Glass top cracked from a dropped pot or lid

Repairing Kenmore cooktops in the Las Vegas Valley
A Kenmore built-in cooktop is wired or plumbed separately from any oven and dropped into a counter cutout. Frigidaire and Whirlpool built most of them, and the parts follow that maker. A Frigidaire-built smoothtop uses its own element and switch designs, while a Whirlpool-built gas top uses different igniters and spark modules.
Cooktop calls usually involve one zone or burner, not the whole unit, which keeps most of these repairs contained. We check the supply and controls, test the failing zone, inspect the glass or grates, and give one price before any repair. Island cooktops sometimes need extra care because of the drawers, cabinets and downdraft venting packed underneath them.
Smoothtop elements and switches
Radiant Kenmore cooktops have ribbon elements under ceramic glass, controlled by infinite switches or a touch control board. A dead element is often a broken element ribbon, while one that only runs on high usually means the switch has failed. Dual and triple elements add a selector switch, which is another possible failure point.
The glass can crack from impact or from a pot left on high with no water. A crack is a safety issue, and the top should not be used until the glass is replaced.
Gas cooktop ignition
On a gas Kenmore cooktop, each burner has a switch behind the knob that tells the spark module to fire. A burner that will not spark, or one that will not stop sparking, usually points to a wet or failed switch, a cracked igniter or a module problem. Debris in the ports can also keep a burner from lighting even with a good spark.
Before you call about a cooktop
Check the breaker for an electric top or confirm the gas shutoff is open for a gas top. On gas models, clean and dry each burner base and reseat the caps. On smoothtops, check that the zone selector is set to the right size for your pan. For induction, test with a pan a magnet sticks to.
Keep cleaners off the controls and do not spray liquid onto a touch panel. A gas smell means stop: knobs off, supply valve closed, windows open.
Built-in cutouts and the repair decision
Replacing a cooktop means finding a model that fits the existing counter cutout, which can limit choices and add cost. For that reason, repairing an element, switch, igniter or glass top is often worthwhile. If the glass and a control board fail at once on an older cooktop, we will price both options and let you decide.

Dual elements use a special switch to power the inner and outer rings separately. If only the center heats, either the outer element ring has failed or the dual switch contacts are worn. Both are replaceable. Turn off power before inspecting, and we will test which part has failed so the correct one is ordered.
The hot surface indicator is controlled by a limiter on the element or by the control. When that limiter sticks, the light stays on even when the glass is cool. It is mostly an inconvenience, but it can confuse people about whether the surface is safe. The limiter or element can usually be replaced.
Avoid using it until it is checked. Induction electronics generate heat and rely on a cooling fan. A fan that is blocked or failing triggers a shutdown to protect the power board. Make sure vents below the cooktop are not blocked by items in the cabinet. If the error returns, the fan or board needs service.
Make sure burner caps and heads are dry, seated flat and free of spills. Check that the cooktop is plugged in, since the spark system needs power. If one burner sparks but does not light, its ports may be blocked. If you smell gas, turn off the supply and call before using it again.
No. Even a small crack can let liquid reach the elements and wiring below, and the glass can break further when heated. Turn the cooktop off at the breaker and do not use it until the glass is replaced. Glass tops are usually available as replacement parts, often with the frame.
If the igniter sparks but gas does not light, the burner ports may be clogged, the cap may not be seated or the burner base may be wet. If those are fine, the gas valve or supply may be at fault. Clean and dry the burner, reseat the cap and try again. If it still will not light, have it checked.
Let the glass cool, then use a cleaner made for ceramic cooktops and a soft pad. For burned-on spills, use a razor scraper held at a low angle. Avoid abrasive pads, oven cleaner and glass cleaner with ammonia. Sugary spills should be wiped while still warm, carefully, since they can pit the glass as they cool.
Induction cooktops can often be repaired. Common repairs include cooling fans, power boards, coils and touch controls. The cost depends on the part and availability for your model. Because replacement often means matching the cutout, repairing a cooktop with a sound glass top is frequently the better option.
On a dual or triple element, the center ring heats alone when the smaller size is selected. If you have selected the larger size and only the center heats, the outer ribbon or the selector switch may have failed. We test each ring and the switch to see which part needs replacing.
