How a Repair Visit Works
What to know about Whirlpool cooktops
Whirlpool makes built-in cooktops in smooth glass electric, gas and induction versions, usually installed in a counter cutout over a cabinet or wall oven. Electric radiant cooktops commonly fail at the surface element or at the infinite switch that controls it, and a cracked glass top can sometimes be replaced as a part. Gas models tend to have spark igniters that click nonstop or not at all, often after a spill gets into the switch. On induction we look at the power board and cooling fan. We test each burner zone and check gas or power supply before quoting.
TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Whirlpool. If this cooktop is still under its factory warranty, contact Whirlpool first.
Where Whirlpool cooktops usually fail
- Radiant surface element stays cold on one burner position
- Infinite switch fails and the element runs only on high
- Gas burner igniter clicks continuously after a liquid spill
- Cracked glass cooktop surface needs a replacement top assembly
- Induction zone shuts off and shows a fault after heating

Repairing Whirlpool cooktops in the Las Vegas Valley
A built-in Whirlpool cooktop sits in a counter cutout with its controls, wiring and gas parts packed into a shallow box underneath. That makes access the first part of every job: we usually lift the top or drop the burner box to reach switches, igniters or boards without disturbing the counter.
The type of cooktop decides the path. A radiant glass top is mostly switches and elements, a gas top is valves and ignition, and induction adds power electronics and a cooling fan. We confirm which you have, how it is fed and whether a wall oven sits below it before testing anything, since that affects what can be removed safely.
Radiant glass cooktops
Each zone on a Whirlpool radiant top has a ribbon element under the glass, a limiter that protects the glass from overheating, and a switch or control that cycles it. A zone that stays dark can be any of the three. A zone that glows but heats poorly often has a limiter cutting out early.
Dual and triple zones add extra rings and switching, which adds more points of failure. We measure each element and verify the switch output before ordering parts.
Gas and induction tops
Gas Whirlpool cooktops use sealed burners with spark ignition from a shared module. Moisture from cleaning or a boil-over can make one switch tell the module to keep sparking. Many cases clear up as the switch dries, but a damaged switch needs replacing.
Induction tops need compatible pans and a working cooling fan under the glass. In a cabinet with little airflow, the electronics may shut a zone down to protect themselves, so we check ventilation and the fan as part of the diagnosis.
Owner checks and what to avoid
Check the breaker, try a different pan, and on gas models make sure the burner caps are seated flat and dry. Clean a glass top only with cooktop cleaner and a scraper made for it.
Turn off the breaker and gas supply before lifting a cooktop. Do not keep using a cracked glass surface, because spills can reach live parts below. If you smell gas, leave the cooktop off and do not use switches or flames nearby.
Repair or replace
Switches, elements, igniters and spark modules are reasonable repairs on most Whirlpool cooktops. A replacement glass top is available for many models and can be worth it if the rest of the cooktop is in good shape.
Because a new cooktop must match the counter cutout, repair often wins. If the cooktop is old and needs a costly board or glass, we will compare both options with you.

We cover 15 ZIP codes in Enterprise, Spring Valley, Paradise and southern Henderson.
If only one zone is dead, the surface element itself, the infinite switch that controls it or a burned wire connection under the glass are the usual causes. Turn off the breaker before looking at anything. We test each component so you replace only the failed part instead of guessing between element and switch.
Water or cleaner that drips around a knob can reach the spark switch underneath and make it click continuously. Turn the cooktop off, remove the knobs and let the area dry for a day; a hair dryer on low can help. If the clicking continues after it is completely dry, the switch or spark module may need replacement.
The glass top is often sold as an assembly for many Whirlpool models, so replacement is possible. Whether it is worthwhile depends on the age of the cooktop and part availability. Don't cook on a cracked glass top; a spill can run through to the elements and wiring. We check the model number and give you the option before ordering.
Induction only heats cookware with a magnetic base. If a magnet sticks firmly to the bottom of the pan, it should work. Aluminum, copper and glass will not heat, and some pans that are only slightly magnetic heat poorly or make the zone shut off. Rule out cookware before booking a repair for a zone that will not start.
A slow zone often has a limiter switching the element off too soon or a switch that is not sending full power. Cookware also matters: warped pans make poor contact with the glass and slow heating. Try a flat pan. If one zone is still clearly slower than the others, it needs testing.
Igniter replacement involves gas components and live wiring, so we suggest leaving it to a technician. You can safely clean and dry the burner head, cap and the area around the igniter with the power off. If a burner still will not light or keeps clicking after drying overnight, book a repair.
Some humming or buzzing is normal on induction, especially at high power or with multi-layer pans. The sound comes from the magnetic field acting on the pan. Loud rattling, grinding or a fan that never stops after use is different and may point to a failing cooling fan or loose part.
Most Whirlpool touch cooktops have a control lock that is engaged by holding a lock key for a few seconds. Holding it again usually releases it. Check your manual for the exact key. If the lock will not release or the controls do not respond at all, the touch control may need service.
Many Whirlpool gas cooktops can be converted using the correct orifice set for propane, plus a regulator adjustment. Conversion must be done carefully with the right parts, and the flame should be checked afterward. We can confirm whether your model supports conversion when we see it.
