What to know about Hotpoint cooktops

Hotpoint cooktops are basic built-in electric units, most with plug-in coil elements, set into a countertop. Because they sit in the counter rather than on a range, access to switches and wiring is either from above through the lifted top or from the cabinet below, depending on the model. Common faults are elements that stop heating, infinite switches with burned contacts, connections loosened by years of heat cycling, and indicator lights that fail. We first check that the circuit from the breaker supplies full voltage, then test each element and switch.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Hotpoint. If this cooktop is still under its factory warranty, contact Hotpoint first.

Where Hotpoint cooktops usually fail

  • Coil element heating unevenly or not at all
  • Infinite switch contacts burned from heavy daily use
  • Wiring connection loosened by repeated heat cycling
  • Burner sitting crooked because the receptacle is damaged
  • Breaker tripping when one particular element turns on

Repairing Hotpoint cooktops in the Las Vegas Valley

Hotpoint cooktops are basic built-in electric units, usually with four plug-in coil elements, set into a countertop. They have no oven attached, so all of the electrical components serve the cooking surface: elements, receptacles, infinite switches, indicator lights and the wiring that ties them together. Most are 30 inches wide.

Because the cooktop sits in a counter, how we reach the components depends on the model. Some lift up from the top like a hood; others are serviced from the cabinet below. Either way, most repairs are done without removing the whole cooktop. We protect the counter and the cabinet below while we work, since the stone or laminate around the opening chips easily.

Element, receptacle or switch?

A coil that does not heat may have a broken element, a burned receptacle or a failed infinite switch. Swapping the element with a working one of the same size tells us a lot. If the problem moves with the element, the element is bad. If it stays with the position, the receptacle or switch is at fault.

Burn marks on a receptacle or a coil that sits unevenly are signs the connection has been arcing, and the receptacle should be replaced along with the element.

Breaker trips and wiring

A cooktop that trips the breaker when one element turns on usually has a shorted element or a damaged wire. If it trips with every element, the fault may be in the main supply wiring or the breaker itself. A breaker that trips only after the cooktop has been on for a while points to a connection heating up under load, which we look for with the power off.

Owner checks

Turn the cooktop off and let it cool, then unplug and reseat each element firmly. Check whether the problem element works in another position. Confirm the breaker is fully on.

Do not use foil drip pan liners that touch the element terminals, and do not try to rewire a receptacle yourself. The cooktop runs on 240 volts.

Older homes and cooktop wiring

Many built-in coil cooktops were installed decades ago in the central valley's ranch homes. The wiring connection under the counter may be aluminum or have loosened over years of heat cycling. During a repair, we inspect the supply connection and the wires leading to each element, and we recommend an electrician when the home wiring itself needs work.

Keep the cooktop or swap it

Elements, receptacles, switches and indicator lights are inexpensive and well stocked, so repair is almost always the right call on a Hotpoint coil cooktop. Replacement becomes reasonable only if the top is badly rusted or damaged, or if you want to upgrade to a different style.

With the cooktop cool and off, swap the suspect coil with a working one of the same size. If the problem moves with the coil, the element is bad. If the problem stays at the same position, the switch, receptacle or wiring is at fault. Make sure each coil is pushed fully into its receptacle before you test.

Leave the breaker off. A trip that happens only when one element is switched on points to a shorted element or burned wiring at that position. A trip at any time suggests a wiring fault in the junction box or supply. Resetting it over and over can damage the breaker and wiring, so have it checked first.

An uneven glow can mean the coil is breaking down inside, and a coil that develops a bright spot or blister can split and arc. Stop using it and replace it. Coil elements are standard parts, and a matching replacement for most Hotpoint cooktops is easy to find.

The light shows that an element is powered. If the elements still heat, the bulb or the switch that runs the light has probably failed, which is a minor repair. If neither the light nor any element works, the problem is upstream: the breaker, the supply wiring or a main connection under the cooktop.

Sometimes, if the new cooktop matches the cutout dimensions and electrical requirements. Many do not line up exactly, which means counter work. If you are considering a change, measure the cutout and check the circuit before buying. Repairing the existing coil cooktop is usually far cheaper.

Plug-in coil elements can usually be replaced by an owner once the cooktop is off and cool. Use the correct size and part number. If the new element does not work, the receptacle or switch is likely the issue and needs a technician.

A burning smell on startup often comes from spills on the elements or drip pans. A sharp electrical smell or visible sparks point to a damaged receptacle or wire. Turn the cooktop off and book a repair. Note which element was on.

Hotpoint drip pans come in sizes matched to the elements. Using the right size keeps the element seated properly and protects the receptacle from spills. Mismatched pans can let spills reach the terminals and wiring underneath, so replace damaged ones with the correct size.

An indicator that stays lit can mean a switch has failed and an element is getting power. Check whether any element is warm. If one is, turn off the breaker and book a repair. An element left on can overheat the cabinet.
