What to know about Maytag microwaves

Maytag microwaves are mostly over-the-range models that combine a microwave with a vent hood, plus some countertop units. Common problems include a microwave that runs and spins but does not heat, which often traces to a failed high-voltage diode, capacitor, magnetron or door switch; a turntable that stops turning; and a vent fan or light that fails. Because the high-voltage capacitor holds a dangerous charge even when unplugged, these repairs belong with a technician. On a visit we discharge the capacitor safely, test the high-voltage circuit and door switches, and check the mounting and venting before quoting.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Maytag. If this microwave is still under its factory warranty, contact Maytag first.

  • Microwave runs and turntable spins but food stays cold
  • Door switch fails and the microwave will not start
  • Vent fan or hood light stops working on OTR model

Repairing Maytag microwaves in the Las Vegas Valley

Most Maytag microwaves we see hang above a range as over-the-range units, combining a microwave, a vent fan and a cooktop light. Countertop models exist too, but the OTR is the one that gets used several times a day. That makes them more than a convenience appliance: when the fan fails, the cooktop below loses its ventilation, and steam and grease linger in the kitchen.

The heating side is a high-voltage system with a transformer, capacitor, diode and magnetron, protected by a chain of door switches. Those parts can deliver a dangerous shock even with the cord unplugged, which is why internal repairs belong with a technician. Owners can still do a few safe checks first, and those help us narrow the cause before we arrive.

Over-the-range design and how it affects repair

An OTR microwave hangs from a wall plate and is bolted through the top cabinet. Some repairs, such as the door switches, can be reached with the unit in place. Others, such as the magnetron or high-voltage transformer, may require removing it from the wall. That is a two-person job, especially over a range.

Vent fans pull air from the cooktop and either push it outside or recirculate it through a charcoal filter. A fan that runs on its own when the range is hot is often a heat sensor doing its job.

Checks that are safe

Heat a cup of water for one minute and check whether it warms. Test the vent fan at each speed and the light. Make sure the door closes fully and the latch hooks are not broken. Clean the metal grease filters underneath; a clogged filter weakens the fan.

Never open the outer cabinet or run the microwave empty to test it. If you see sparks or smell burning, stop using it.

What we test on a Maytag microwave

We disconnect power and discharge the capacitor before opening the cabinet. Then we test the door switches, the diode, the capacitor, the transformer and the magnetron, along with the control relay. For vent problems, we check the fan motor, switches and thermal sensor.

When the unit needs to come down, we support it properly and reinstall it on the wall plate securely. One price covers parts and labor.

Repair or replace an OTR microwave

Door switches, fuses, diodes and fan motors are reasonable repairs on most units. A magnetron or control board on an older, lower-cost microwave can approach the price of a new one, though an OTR replacement also involves installation. We will give you both views so you can choose.

Maytag Microwave Repair Questions

Still have questions?

We cover 15 ZIP codes in Enterprise, Spring Valley, Paradise and southern Henderson.

When the light, fan and turntable work but food stays cold, the high-voltage system is the likely issue: a failed diode, capacitor or magnetron, or sometimes a door switch that interrupts that circuit. These parts carry lethal voltage even after unplugging, so please do not open the case. We safely discharge the capacitor and test each component before recommending a repair.

Sparking often comes from a damaged or greasy waveguide cover, the small panel on the interior side wall, or from chipped interior paint exposing metal. Metal cookware or twist ties are other causes. Stop using the microwave until checked. A waveguide cover is an inexpensive replacement, but prolonged arcing can damage the magnetron.

Door switches, vent fans, lights, turntable motors and diodes are usually worthwhile. A magnetron or control board failure on an older unit is a closer call, especially once you factor in removing and remounting it above the range. We give you one price after diagnosis, so you can compare it against a replacement and installation.

Many over-the-range models turn the vent fan on automatically when they sense high heat from the cooktop below, to protect their electronics. That is normal. If the fan runs when the cooktop is off and cool, a faulty thermostat or control board may be the reason, and that can be tested on site.

The door switches are designed so that if one fails, a monitor switch shorts the circuit and blows the main fuse, preventing the microwave from running with the door unsafe. A blown fuse after closing the door usually means a switch has failed. We replace the faulty switch and the fuse together.

Usually yes. Unplug the microwave or switch off its breaker, remove the small cover under the unit and replace the bulb with the type listed in the manual. If a new bulb does not light, the socket, switch or control relay may be at fault, which needs a technician.

If your microwave recirculates air instead of venting outside, the charcoal filter absorbs cooking odors and loses effect over time. Most manufacturers suggest replacing it periodically. It does not affect heating, but a clogged grease filter can strain the fan.

Yes. If we need to take it down for repair, we rehang it on its wall plate, secure the top bolts through the cabinet, and test the vent fan, light and heating before we leave. We check the plate too, since a loose plate can let the unit tilt.

Usually not. Check that the glass tray and roller ring are seated correctly and the coupler underneath is not cracked. If they look fine, the small turntable motor below the floor may have failed. That is a modest part, and replacing it is a common repair.
