What to know about Frigidaire dryers

Frigidaire dryers come in electric and gas versions, including stackable laundry centers where the dryer sits above a washer in one frame. Common repairs are a dead heat circuit (thermal fuse, high-limit thermostat, element or gas igniter), worn drum glides or rollers that scrape and squeal, and a broken drive belt. Laundry centers add access challenges because the dryer is part of a single unit, often in a tight closet. Lint buildup inside the cabinet is a real concern here. We test the heat circuit, clean out internal lint we find and check the vent before quoting.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Frigidaire. If this dryer is still under its factory warranty, contact Frigidaire first.

Where Frigidaire dryers usually fail

  • Thermal fuse opens and the dryer runs without heat
  • Worn drum glides scrape and leave marks on clothes
  • Gas igniter cracks and the burner never lights
  • Laundry center dryer drum stops turning after belt breaks
  • Lint buildup inside the cabinet near the heater housing

Frigidaire Dryer · Las Vegas Valley

Repairing Frigidaire dryers in the Las Vegas Valley

Frigidaire builds dryers in standard 27-inch widths, in electric and gas versions, and as the upper half of its stacked laundry centers. Most use a conventional belt drive with a motor that also turns the blower, so a drum problem and an airflow problem can show up together. A worn motor bearing, for example, can slow both the drum and the blower at once.

In Las Vegas many dryers sit in a garage or a small interior laundry closet with a long vent run to the roof or an outside wall. That layout affects drying time more than most owners expect, so we include the vent in the diagnosis rather than treating the dryer in isolation.

Electric versus gas Frigidaire dryers

Electric models heat with an element and need a 240-volt supply, so a dryer that tumbles with no heat can be as simple as one tripped leg of a double breaker. Gas models use an igniter, flame sensor and valve coils, and each fails in a recognizable pattern.

On a gas dryer, a burner that lights, goes out and never relights usually points to the valve coils. An igniter that never glows suggests the igniter or the flame sensor. We check the gas shutoff and the connector before working on the burner assembly.

Drying takes forever: dryer or vent?

Long drying times are the most common complaint and often the least mechanical. A crushed foil duct behind the machine, a vent run that climbs through the attic, or a roof cap packed with lint can all hold moisture in the drum.

We measure the airflow and temperature at the exhaust. If the dryer is heating properly and air is barely moving, the fix is the vent, not a part. If airflow is strong and temperature is low, the heat circuit gets tested.

Owner checks before calling

Clean the lint screen and look into the screen slot with a flashlight for buildup. Check that the breaker is fully on for an electric unit, and on a gas unit confirm that the shutoff handle is in line with the pipe. Feel the outside vent hood while the dryer runs; you should feel warm air pushing out.

Unplug the dryer before moving it. If you smell gas, leave the appliance off, avoid switches, and contact the gas utility before anything else.

Repair value on a Frigidaire dryer

Dryers are mechanically simple, so most Frigidaire repairs are worth doing: belts, rollers, idler pulleys, thermal fuses, igniters and elements are all standard parts. Motor replacement is usually still reasonable.

The case for replacement is stronger when the drum is rusted through, the cabinet is damaged, or the laundry center's washer half is also failing. In that situation we will lay out both repairs so you can compare them.

Yes. The dryer in a stacked laundry center uses familiar dryer parts, but access is tighter because the whole unit usually has to be pulled out of a closet and partly disassembled. Make sure the path out of the closet is clear before the visit. We repair the dryer section without replacing the whole combined unit when parts are available.

Many Frigidaire dryers use felt or plastic drum glides at the front bearing, and when they wear, the drum scrapes metal on metal. You may also find black marks on clothes. Rollers and idler pulleys cause squealing or thumping. We replace worn glides and rollers together so the drum runs quietly again.

At least yearly, and more often if loads take longer to dry or the dryer cabinet feels unusually hot. Desert dust plus lint builds up in vents, especially long runs to the roof common in two-story stucco homes. A restricted vent is the leading cause of blown thermal fuses we find on Frigidaire dryers.

A faint odor for a moment as the burner lights can be normal. A persistent smell is not. If you smell gas beyond a second or two, turn off the dryer and the gas supply valve, open windows and call your gas company. Delayed ignition from a weak igniter can also cause a brief odor, which we can diagnose.

A dryer that stops early is often overheating and tripping a thermostat, usually because the vent is restricted. A failing motor that overheats can do the same. We check the exhaust airflow first, then the motor's draw and the thermostats.

A thump that repeats with each rotation commonly comes from a flat spot on a drum roller or a seam in the belt. Sometimes an item is caught between the drum and the front panel. We open the cabinet, inspect the rollers and idler, and replace what is worn.

Many do. Two metal bars inside the drum detect moisture and end the cycle when clothes are dry. Fabric softener residue can coat them and make the dryer stop early or run too long. Wiping them with a little rubbing alcohol is a safe owner fix.

Not practically. Electric and gas dryers use different heat systems, wiring and safety controls. Converting would mean replacing most of the machine. If you are moving to a home with only a gas hookup, buying a gas model is the right choice, and the same goes in reverse for an all-electric laundry room.

Stop the cycle and unplug it. Lint inside the cabinet near the heater is a common cause, as is a belt slipping on a seized roller. Do not run it again until it has been inspected, because lint fires start in exactly that area.
