How a Repair Visit Works
What to know about Hotpoint refrigerators
Hotpoint refrigerators are mostly top-freezer models with straightforward dial controls, and they turn up in a lot of apartments and rental homes. Like many GE Appliances top-freezers, they cool the fresh-food section with air sent down from the freezer through a damper, so frost on the evaporator, a stuck damper or a weak fan can leave the lower compartment warm. Other common problems include a stalled condenser fan, door gaskets torn by heavy use, and water leaking from a clogged defrost drain. During a visit we test the defrost components, both fans, the damper control and the gaskets.
TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Hotpoint. If this refrigerator is still under its factory warranty, contact Hotpoint first.
Where Hotpoint refrigerators usually fail
- Lower compartment warm because frost covered the evaporator
- Condenser fan stalled so the compressor runs hot
- Fresh-food damper control stuck in the closed position
- Door gaskets torn on high-traffic rental units
- Defrost drain clogged, leaving water under the produce drawers

Other Refrigerator Brands We Service
Repairing Hotpoint refrigerators in the Las Vegas Valley
Hotpoint is the value line from GE Appliances, and its refrigerators are mostly simple top-freezer models with mechanical controls. They are common in rental homes, apartment units and garages in the south and southwest valley, partly because they are inexpensive and partly because they are easy to service. Many landlords like them for exactly that reason.
That simplicity works in your favor during a repair. Parts are widely stocked, the layout is familiar, and most faults can be pinned down with a thermometer, a meter and a look at the evaporator. The bigger question with an older Hotpoint is usually not whether it can be fixed, but whether the repair fits the value of the unit.
One evaporator, two compartments
Nearly all of the cooling in a Hotpoint top-freezer happens in the freezer. A fan pushes cold air across the evaporator and some of it is sent down into the fresh-food section through a damper. If the freezer feels fine but the lower section is warm, the air path between them is the first place we look.
When the freezer itself is warm too, the list changes to the defrost system, the compressor start parts, or a condenser that cannot shed heat.
Garage refrigerators in summer
Many Hotpoint top-freezers end up as second refrigerators in a garage. In Las Vegas summers a closed garage gets far hotter than the conditions most household refrigerators are designed for. The compressor runs almost nonstop, the condenser struggles, and food in the freezer can soften in the late afternoon even when nothing has broken.
If your garage unit only misbehaves from June to September, the location may be the root problem. We can still fix worn parts, but we will tell you honestly when the garage itself is working against the appliance.
Checks for owners and tenants
Pull the base grille and look for a dusty condenser area, and make sure the unit has space to breathe at the back. Listen for the fan inside the freezer when the door switch is pressed. Check that the doors close on their own and the gaskets are not torn.
Avoid scraping frost off the freezer's back panel with sharp tools, and do not unplug and replug the refrigerator repeatedly to reset it, since that strains the compressor start parts.
Repair value on a budget refrigerator
Fans, defrost parts, start relays, thermostats and gaskets are usually reasonable repairs on a Hotpoint. A sealed-system leak or compressor failure is another matter, and on a basic top-freezer we will usually tell you that replacing the refrigerator is the better choice. For landlords, we can explain the findings clearly so the decision can be made quickly.

Many Hotpoint top-freezers have one control for the freezer and one for the fresh-food section, and the two interact because they share the same cold air. Set both to the middle settings and wait a full day before judging, since changes take time to settle. If the refrigerator still runs warm at the coldest settings, the problem is mechanical rather than a control setting.
Check the condenser fan near the compressor at the bottom rear. If it is not spinning while the compressor runs, the compressor can overheat, shut off on its overload and keep retrying, which often sounds like buzzing and clicking. A failed condenser fan is a common and fairly modest repair, so unplug the unit if it is overheating and have the fan tested.
If the repair involves a fan, defrost part, thermostat or gasket, it usually is, because those are common parts with modest labor. A sealed-system failure on an older top-freezer is often not worth repairing. We give one price for parts and labor after diagnosis so you can compare repair against replacement before anything is done.
Frost on the walls and packages usually means warm, humid air is getting in. Check the door gasket for tears and make sure the door closes firmly, especially when the freezer is packed full. In a climate as dry as ours, heavy frost inside points to a seal or door alignment problem far more often than to humidity in the house.
A repeating click with no cooling often means the compressor is trying to start and the overload is cutting it off. The start relay is a common and inexpensive cause. If the relay tests fine, the compressor itself may be failing, which changes the repair decision.
You can, but expect it to work very hard in summer and to wear faster. Give it space around the back and sides, keep the condenser clean, and avoid placing it in direct sun from an open garage door. It may still struggle on the hottest days.
It is not usually dangerous, but it should be reported. Water under the crisper drawers typically comes from a defrost drain that has frozen or clogged. Left alone, it can spoil food and eventually leak onto the floor. Tenants should tell the landlord or property manager promptly, so the drain can be cleared before the problem spreads.
Because the lower compartment depends on air from the freezer, a blocked passage, a frosted evaporator or a weak fan can starve it while the freezer still feels cold. We check those parts before assuming anything is wrong with the compressor.
Most repairs such as fans, relays, thermostats and defrost parts take one visit, since the parts are commonly stocked. A defrost problem sometimes needs the evaporator thawed first, which adds time to that visit. A sealed-system fault is the exception, and we explain what that would involve before anyone decides.
