How a Repair Visit Works
What to know about Roper refrigerators
Roper refrigerators are mostly basic top-freezer models with a mechanical temperature dial and simple defrost controls, which makes them common in apartments and rental homes. When the freezer stays cold but the fresh food side warms, the usual culprits are a defrost heater, defrost thermostat or defrost timer, or an evaporator fan that's quit. A clicking compressor that won't run points to a start relay. We test the defrost components, fans and relay, look at the condenser and give one price, with an honest view on whether the repair makes sense for an older unit.
TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Roper. If this refrigerator is still under its factory warranty, contact Roper first.
Where Roper refrigerators usually fail
- Defrost timer sticks and frost chokes the evaporator coil
- Fresh food side warms while the top freezer stays cold
- Start relay fails and the compressor clicks but won't run
- Condenser fan stops and the refrigerator runs constantly
- Water pools under crisper drawers from a clogged defrost drain

Repairing Roper refrigerators in the Las Vegas Valley
A Roper refrigerator is about as plain as a modern fridge gets: a top freezer, a mechanical temperature dial, an air damper that lets cold air down into the fresh-food side, and a small set of defrost and fan parts. Whirlpool builds it, and many of its parts are shared with Whirlpool and other models from the same family.
That simplicity is good news for repairs. Most failures come down to a handful of parts, and those parts are easy to source. We check the defrost system, fans, damper and start relay, look at the condenser coils, and give you one price, along with a straight answer about whether an older unit deserves the money.
How cold air moves in a Roper top-freezer
The evaporator and fan sit in the freezer. Cold air is pushed into the freezer and through a passage to the fresh-food compartment, where a damper controlled by the fridge dial sets how much gets through. If the evaporator ices over, the fan stalls or the damper sticks, the fresh-food side warms first while the freezer may still feel cold.
That is why a warm lower section on a Roper rarely means the compressor is the problem. The defrost parts and airflow are checked first.
Coils, garages and summer heat
Many Roper refrigerators use condenser coils behind a front grille at the bottom, cooled by a small fan. Dust and pet hair build up quickly. In a hot garage, a Roper used as a second fridge has to work much harder, and a dirty condenser makes that worse. Cleaning the coils is one of the simplest ways to help it cope.
Owner checks that are worth doing
Check both temperature controls and make sure they were not turned down by accident. Look for frost on the back wall of the freezer, and listen for the fan with the freezer door switch pressed. Make sure the vents between the compartments are not blocked by food.
If you clean the condenser, unplug the fridge first and use a soft brush and vacuum. Do not bend the fan blade or poke at wiring under the unit.
Repair or replace a Roper fridge
Defrost heaters, thermostats, timers, fans, dampers and start relays are inexpensive repairs, and they often add years to a Roper. A sealed-system leak or compressor failure is different. On a basic top-freezer, that usually costs more than the refrigerator is worth, and we will tell you so plainly rather than sell a repair that does not make sense.

Cold air flows from the freezer down to the fresh food section through a vent. If frost blocks the evaporator because a defrost part failed, or the evaporator fan stopped, the bottom warms first. Check the vent isn't blocked by food. If it persists, the defrost system needs testing.
Defrost parts, fans and relays are inexpensive and common for Roper models, so those repairs usually pay off. A sealed system failure, such as a leak or dead compressor, is a bigger decision on a budget fridge. We tell landlords plainly which situation they're in before any work.
A repeating click near the bottom back is often the compressor start relay trying to start the compressor and failing. The relay may be bad, or the compressor may be. Unplug the fridge, move perishables, and book a diagnosis so we can test both parts.
Defrost water normally drains through a tube to a pan under the fridge. If the drain clogs with debris or ice, water backs up into the fresh food section. Flushing the drain with warm water often fixes it. Recurring freezing in the drain can point to a defrost fault.
It controls how much cold air flows from the freezer into the fresh-food section. The fresh-food dial adjusts it. If the damper sticks closed, the lower section warms while the freezer stays cold. If it sticks open, the fresh-food side can freeze. Checking the damper is a standard part of diagnosing temperature problems on a Roper.
It may run, but heat makes it work much harder and can shorten its life. Some fridges struggle when the garage is extremely hot or very cold. Giving it space for airflow, keeping the condenser clean and keeping it out of direct sun all help. If it cannot keep up in summer, the location may be the issue rather than a part.
Heavy frost on the back panel usually means the automatic defrost system is not working. The defrost heater, thermostat or timer may have failed. Frost blocks airflow, so the fresh-food side often warms first. Defrosting by hand will help for a while, but the frost will return until the defrost part is replaced.
Many common Roper parts are widely available, so a repair can sometimes be completed on the first visit if we have the part. If a part has to be ordered, the repair is completed on a return visit. Sealed-system work takes longer because the system has to be opened, repaired and recharged.
Moving a refrigerator can shift the drain pan, bend the condenser fan or knock tubing so it rattles against the cabinet. Check that the fridge is level and nothing is touching the back. If the noise comes from inside the freezer, the evaporator fan may be hitting frost or a loose part. These are usually simple fixes.
