By mid-afternoon the island has soaked up hours of sun, and the unit is trying to dump heat through a small front grille into air that may be well over a hundred degrees. Any dust on that grille or a fan turning slowly tips it over the edge. Clean the grille first. If it still warms, we test the fan, the controls and refrigeration performance.
Scale on the evaporator and water distributor is the most likely cause in this valley. It slows the freeze and reduces ice quality. A dirty condenser or a warm room also cuts output. We descale and sanitize as needed, check water flow and the inlet valve, and test the harvest cycle.
Usually. Drawer slides can bend, wear or come out of alignment, especially when drawers are overloaded with cans or bottles. A torn gasket or an item caught at the back can also stop the drawer sealing. We inspect the slides, adjust or replace them, and fit a new gasket if the old one no longer seals.
Meltwater normally leaves through a gravity drain or a drain pump. If the pump has clogged or failed, or the drain line is kinked or blocked, water backs up into the bin and can freeze the ice into a single block. We clean or replace the pump, clear the line and check that the drain is set up correctly.
Fog or droplets along the glass edges usually mean room air is slipping past a gasket that no longer seals fully, and meeting the cold glass. Door alignment can also be slightly off after years of use. We inspect and replace the gasket and adjust the door so it closes evenly along its full height.

A small grille doing a big job
Everything a Perlick undercounter unit removes from its cabinet has to leave through the grille at its base. A grille matted with dust, lint or pet hair therefore has an outsized effect, and outdoors, sun and yard dust add to the load. We start every cooling complaint at the grille and the condenser fan behind the kick plate.
The ice makers make clear cubes by running water across a chilled evaporator, and they drain either by gravity or through a small pump. Minerals build on the evaporator, the water distributor and the float valve, while a clogged pump sends meltwater back into the bin.

Owner checks for Perlick units
Clean the front grille every month or two, and more often outdoors. Check that drawer and door gaskets are clean and make full contact, and that nothing inside is propping a drawer open. On an ice maker, look for scale and keep up with the cleaning cycle in the manual.
If an outdoor unit warms only on the hottest afternoons, shade over the island helps. Turn off the power before reaching into the grille, and keep stored items from leaning against it.
Is a Perlick repair the better value?
Perlick units are solidly built and sized to specific cabinet openings, so repair is usually the sensible route. Fans, controls, gaskets, slides and ice maker pumps are all replaceable on their own. A sealed-system failure on an older outdoor unit is the case where we put repair and replacement costs side by side.
