What to know about Amana ovens

Amana ovens are part of its freestanding gas and electric ranges, so oven repairs center on a few well-known parts. On electric models, the bake element often burns through with a visible blister or break, and the broil element can do the same. Gas ovens usually fail at the hot-surface igniter, which weakens with age until the oven lights slowly or not at all. A temperature sensor that has drifted causes uneven baking. We test each part with a meter and check the door gasket and hinges, because a door that does not close tightly lets heat escape.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Amana. If this oven is still under its factory warranty, contact Amana first.

Where Amana ovens usually fail

  • Electric bake element blistered or broken through
  • Gas oven slow to light because the igniter weakened
  • Uneven baking from a drifting temperature sensor
  • Oven door not closing flat because of bent hinges
  • Broil element not heating while bake still works

Repairing Amana ovens in the Las Vegas Valley

Every Amana oven we see sits under a freestanding cooktop, built for simple everyday cooking. Most use a small set of parts: a bake element or burner, a broil element or burner, a temperature sensor and a control. That keeps diagnosis focused, and it keeps the parts bill modest compared with ovens full of electronics.

The symptoms people report are usually easy to describe. The oven will not heat, takes too long to preheat or cooks unevenly. We measure the actual temperature, test the heating parts and inspect the door seal, then quote the repair. Most of the parts involved are common enough that the fix can often be scheduled quickly.

Electric oven elements and sensors

Visible bake elements often show damage when they fail, such as a blister or broken coil. Some elements fail internally without a visible mark, so we test resistance. The broil element can fail on its own, leaving baking unaffected.

A temperature sensor that drifts can cause burned or undercooked food even when the elements are fine. We compare the sensor reading against the expected value for the model.

Gas oven ignition

Amana gas ovens use a hot-surface igniter that glows before the gas valve opens. As it ages, it may glow but not draw enough current to open the valve. The result is a slow or failed ignition.

We test the igniter's current draw, inspect the burner and check the gas valve. If you smell gas without a flame, stop using the oven and call.

Doors, hinges and heat loss

An oven door that does not close flat lets heat escape. Bent hinges, a worn gasket or a door that was used as a step can cause this. Baking becomes uneven and preheating slows.

Door hinges and gaskets are replaceable. We check the fit while the oven is hot and cool, since some gaps only show at temperature.

Mechanical controls on basic models

Some lower-priced Amana ranges skip the electronic control entirely and use a mechanical oven thermostat with a capillary bulb inside the cavity. Those thermostats can drift or stick, and the bulb can be knocked out of its clips when racks are moved.

We check that the bulb is mounted where it belongs before blaming the thermostat. If the thermostat is off, it is replaced rather than adjusted, since a recalibrated old thermostat tends to drift again.

What owners can check and when to replace

Check the clock and oven settings, then confirm the breaker or gas supply is on. An oven thermometer helps confirm temperature problems. Keep the oven floor clear of foil.

Element, igniter and sensor repairs are practical on Amana ranges. When an older range needs a new control board on top of other parts, the total can climb past what the range is worth, and we will say so.

Amana Oven Repair Questions

Straight answers to what people ask before booking. If your question isn't here, send it with your booking request and we'll answer it.

Still have questions?

We cover 15 ZIP codes in Enterprise, Spring Valley, Paradise and southern Henderson.

With the oven off and cool, look at the element along the bottom of the cavity. A visible blister, crack or break means it has failed. Sometimes the break is internal and cannot be seen, so the element must be tested with a meter. Turn off the breaker before touching it. The element is a common replacement and is often a one-visit repair.

A faint, brief smell as the burner first ignites can be normal. A longer delay with a noticeable gas odor usually means the igniter is weak and opening the valve slowly. If the smell continues after the burner lights, turn the oven off, ventilate and do not use it until it has been checked. We test the igniter's current draw to confirm.

First check for a dark pan or a baking stone blocking airflow, and confirm the rack position matches the recipe. If cakes burn on the bottom, the temperature sensor may be reading low, so the oven overshoots. A damaged door gasket also lets heat escape unevenly. We check the sensor's resistance against specification and look at the gasket and hinges.

If your model has one, yes, but remove the racks and heavy spills first and stay home while it runs. Self-clean heats the oven far beyond cooking temperatures and can push weak parts such as the thermal fuse or door lock to fail. If your oven is older and has been unreliable, wiping it clean by hand is the safer choice.

A brief faint smell as a gas oven lights can be normal. A strong smell, a smell that continues, or a delay before the burner lights is not. Turn off the oven and the gas supply if possible, ventilate the room, and do not use the oven until it is inspected.

Usually, yes. On most Amana electric ovens the bake and broil elements are wired separately, so a dead broil element leaves baking unaffected, though preheat may be a little slower on models that use both elements to warm up. The reverse is also common. Testing both elements on the same visit avoids a second trip when the other one is close to failing.

A hot kitchen does not usually slow preheating much, but a weak igniter, failing element or poor door seal can make it noticeable. If preheat time has steadily increased, it is likely a part issue. Measure with an oven thermometer and book a diagnosis.

It can be. Uneven baking can come from a drifting sensor, a weak element, a door leak or pan placement. Try rotating pans and using the center rack. If the problem continues, testing the oven will show whether a part is failing.

Usually. Bent or worn hinges are the common cause, often after someone leaned on the open door or a heavy dish was set on it. A gasket that has slipped out of its clips can also hold the door open slightly. Both are replaceable parts, and fixing them restores even baking and keeps heat off the knobs above.
