What to know about Roper ovens

The oven in a Roper range is a plain, mechanical design, gas or electric, usually with a rotary control and a basic thermostat or simple electronic clock. On electric models, a bake element that burns through or a broil element that blisters is a common failure. On gas units, a weak hot-surface igniter keeps the burner from lighting even though it glows. Thermostats and temperature sensors can drift. We test the element or igniter, check the sensor and thermostat, and give one price before replacement.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Roper. If this oven is still under its factory warranty, contact Roper first.

Where Roper ovens usually fail

  • Bake element splits open and the oven won't heat
  • Hot-surface igniter glows but gas never ignites
  • Oven thermostat drifts and baking runs too hot
  • Broil element blisters and stops working
  • Oven door hinge breaks and the door won't close fully

Repairing Roper ovens in the Las Vegas Valley

A Roper oven is built for simplicity: a rotary dial or a basic electronic clock, a bake element and a broil element on electric models, and a hot-surface igniter and burner on gas models. Older units use a mechanical thermostat with a capillary bulb inside the oven, while newer ones use an electronic temperature sensor. Knowing which type you have narrows the diagnosis quickly.

Because Roper ranges share many parts with Whirlpool models, parts are usually easy to source and many repairs are quick. We test the elements or igniter, check the thermostat or sensor, and measure actual oven temperature with a separate probe. Then you get one price for the work, and nothing is replaced until you agree to it.

Mechanical thermostats and calibration

On a Roper with a rotary bake dial and a capillary bulb inside the oven, the thermostat controls temperature directly. If the bulb is knocked out of its clips or the capillary tube is kinked, the oven can run hot or cold. Some dials can be calibrated by adjusting a screw behind the knob, which suits small, consistent differences.

Electronic Roper models use a sensor and a control. A failing sensor can make the oven run hot or cold or display an error.

Gas ovens and the broiler drawer

Many Roper gas ranges have a broiler drawer under the oven. The bake burner and igniter are under the oven floor panel. A weak igniter can glow without opening the gas valve, so the oven takes a long time to light or never lights. Measuring the igniter's current draw confirms it.

Simple checks at home

Place an oven thermometer in the middle of the oven and compare it to the setting after preheating. On electric models, look at the bake and broil elements for breaks or blisters. On gas models, look through the bottom to see if the igniter glows.

Turn off the breaker before touching elements. Do not cover the oven floor with foil, which can damage the finish and affect heating.

Repair value on a Roper oven

Elements, igniters, thermostats, sensors and door hinges are inexpensive and usually worth replacing. A Roper range is a lower-cost appliance, so if the oven needs several parts on an older unit with other wear, replacement may be the better choice. We will lay out the cost of each path.

A hot-surface igniter must draw enough current to open the gas safety valve. As it weakens, it still glows but no longer opens the valve. Replacing the igniter is the usual fix. If you smell gas, turn the oven off and ventilate before booking a repair.

Look for a visible break, blister or burn spot on the element. You can also preheat and see if it glows. If the oven heats only from the top or not at all, the bake element is a likely cause. Replacing it is a straightforward job.

Mechanical thermostats and sensors can drift with age. Check with an oven thermometer at 350°F after preheating. If it's far off, the thermostat or sensor may need replacement. Some models allow calibration, which we can adjust if the part is still working.

Yes. A door that doesn't close lets heat escape, wastes energy and affects cooking. Hinges are inexpensive and usually replaced without removing the range. If the door glass or gasket is damaged too, we can fix those during the same visit.

Burned bottoms can come from an oven running hot, a thermostat or sensor problem, dark pans or using the lowest rack. On gas ovens, a damaged or missing oven floor panel can let direct heat reach the pan. Check the temperature with a thermometer and move the pan to the middle rack. If it is still too hot, have the thermostat checked.

Many Roper ovens can be adjusted. On mechanical models, the bake knob may have an adjustment ring or screw. On electronic models, the control may have an offset setting. Calibration suits a small, steady difference. A large or changing difference usually means the thermostat, sensor or heat source is failing.

A weak hot-surface igniter is the most common reason. The igniter must reach a certain current before the gas valve opens. As it ages, it takes longer to reach that point, or never does. Replacing the igniter is a routine repair. If the igniter does not glow at all, the control or wiring may be at fault.

You can use broil for some cooking, but it heats from the top only and can burn food. If the bake element has a visible break or blister, avoid using the oven until it is replaced, since a damaged element can arc. Turn off the breaker if you see sparks or smell burning.

Worn or broken hinges and springs are the usual cause. Over time, especially in busy kitchens and rentals, the hinges wear and the door no longer closes tightly. A door that does not seal lets heat escape and can make the oven run long. Replacing the hinges is usually a simple repair.
