What to know about Amana freezers

Amana freezers are mainly chest models plus some uprights, often bought as extra storage for a garage or utility room. Chest freezers are simple manual-defrost machines, so most failures involve the compressor not starting, a start relay or overload, a thermostat that stops calling for cooling, or a lid gasket that no longer seals. Upright models add a defrost system and evaporator fan, which bring their own failures. Garage placement in valley summer heat is a major factor in how hard these units work. A visit includes checking the start components, thermostat and lid seal before considering the sealed system.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Amana. If this freezer is still under its factory warranty, contact Amana first.

Where Amana freezers usually fail

  • Compressor clicking on and off without ever starting
  • Chest freezer warming up after the thermostat fails
  • Lid gasket torn so frost builds around the rim
  • Upright model frosting over from a defrost failure
  • Freezer struggling to hold temperature in a hot garage

Repairing Amana freezers in the Las Vegas Valley

Most Amana freezers we meet were bought for one reason: room for bulk groceries, game or meal prep. They are plain machines. A chest model has no fan and no automatic defrost, just a compressor, a thermostat and tubing foamed into the walls. That short parts list makes the diagnosis quick when something stops.

The urgent question is always whether the food can be saved and whether the freezer is worth fixing. We answer both on the first visit by testing the start circuit, the thermostat and the cabinet temperature, and by looking at how the unit is placed in the room. Tell us how long it has been warm and what the food looks like so we can help you plan around the repair.

When a chest freezer clicks and stays warm

A compressor needs help to start: a relay and an overload mounted on its side. When the relay fails, the compressor hums, the overload trips with a click, and the cycle repeats every few minutes. Food slowly thaws while the freezer sounds busy.

Those start parts are inexpensive and usually the first thing we test. If the relay and overload are good and the compressor still will not run, we measure the compressor windings to see whether the motor itself has failed.

Upright Amana models and their extra parts

Frost-free Amana uprights add an evaporator fan, a defrost heater and a defrost control. If any of those fail, the coil behind the rear panel slowly closes off with frost and the freezer warms from the top shelf down.

Manual-defrost uprights have cold shelves with tubing inside them, and frost builds on those shelves over time. If the frost gets thick, cooling suffers even though nothing is broken. Defrosting it fully often restores performance.

Heat, garages and condenser placement

Many Amana chest freezers shed heat through the outer cabinet walls rather than a coil at the back. In a garage that bakes all summer, the walls have little room to cool, and the freezer runs much longer. Boxes stacked against the sides make it worse.

Give the cabinet open air on all sides, keep it out of direct afternoon sun through a window or open door, and avoid putting it beside a water heater or dryer. These steps are free and often fix a freezer that only struggles in July and August.

What to try and what to avoid

Check the outlet with a lamp, look for a tripped garage GFCI, and confirm the dial was not turned to off. Make sure the lid closes on its own weight with no bag caught in the seal.

Do not chip ice off the walls of a chest freezer. The refrigerant tubing sits right behind the liner, and a puncture ends the freezer's life. Unplug it, prop the lid and let the frost melt into towels.

Repair value on a simple freezer

Start relays, overloads, thermostats and lid gaskets are low-cost repairs that make sense on almost any Amana freezer. A failed compressor or refrigerant leak on a basic chest model is a different story, and we will usually suggest replacing the freezer instead.

A click every few minutes often means the compressor is trying to start and the overload is tripping it off. The start relay is a common and modestly priced failure. If the relay tests fine, the compressor itself may be failing. Keep the lid closed to protect food while you wait for service, and avoid repeatedly unplugging and replugging it.

When the ice on the walls reaches about a quarter inch, or at least once a year. Thick ice reduces efficiency and storage space. Unplug the freezer, move food to coolers, and let the ice melt with the lid open, using the drain plug if your model has one. Never chip the ice with a sharp tool, which can puncture the wall tubing.

Check your model's manual for its rated room-temperature range. Summer garage temperatures here can exceed what many freezers are built for, which leads to constant running and early compressor wear. Keep the freezer out of direct sun, leave space around it for airflow, and consider insulating or ventilating the garage if the freezer has to stay there.

A lid gasket that is torn, flattened or sitting unevenly lets humid air in, and it turns to frost along the rim. Check whether the lid closes evenly and that nothing is propping it open. Warming a deformed gasket with a hair dryer on low can help it reseat. If the gasket is torn, replacing it is the fix.

A reasonably full freezer holds cold better than an empty one, because frozen food acts as thermal mass when the lid opens. Avoid packing it so tightly that the lid cannot seal. If the freezer is mostly empty, a few jugs of water frozen solid help it recover faster after each opening.

It is best to plug it directly into a grounded wall outlet. Light-duty extension cords can overheat and cause low voltage at start-up, which strains the compressor. If you must use one, use a short, heavy-gauge cord rated for the load.

Closing one door can push air into the cabinet and briefly reopen a door that does not latch firmly. A worn gasket, a door out of alignment or a freezer that is not level can all contribute. Leveling the cabinet slightly back often helps the door close on its own.

Unplug it and check the cord and outlet. A burning or electrical smell can come from a failed start relay, a damaged cord or dust on hot components. Do not plug it back in until it is inspected. A loud click followed by a burnt smell often points to start components.

Las Vegas winters are mild, but some freezers are not designed for very cold rooms. The thermostat may sense the cold room and run less often. Check your manual for the minimum ambient temperature. In most valley garages, summer heat is the bigger concern.
