What to know about True Residential freezers

True Residential freezers come in undercounter and full-size column versions, sometimes with a drawer configuration. They use commercial-grade compressors and fans but share the same front-breathing condenser layout as True refrigerators. Common repairs include defrost heater and termination sensor failures that ice the evaporator, a frozen or failed evaporator fan, a worn door or drawer gasket, and a condenser that's clogged with dust. We test the defrost cycle, check airflow and seals, clean the condenser and quote one price.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with True Residential. If this freezer is still under its factory warranty, contact True Residential first.

Where True Residential freezers usually fail

  • Defrost termination sensor fails and evaporator ices solid
  • Freezer drawer gasket tears and frost builds inside
  • Evaporator fan blade freezes in place and stops
  • Clogged front grille traps heat and raises box temperature
  • Digital control shows an alarm for high freezer temperature

Repairing True Residential freezers in the Las Vegas Valley

A True Residential freezer uses the same heavy cabinet and front-breathing layout as the brand's refrigerators, but adds an automatic defrost system: a heater on the evaporator, a termination sensor that ends defrost, and a drain path for the meltwater. When any part of that cycle fails, frost builds on the evaporator coil, airflow drops and the box warms.

Many True freezers are drawer-style undercounter units in islands or bars, where drawer gaskets and slides take the most wear. We check airflow and the front grille, test the defrost heater, termination sensor and fan, inspect the drawer or door seals, and give you one price for the repair before work begins.

When the high-temperature alarm sounds

True units with digital controls can alarm when the box warms beyond a set point. The alarm is useful but does not name the cause. A drawer left ajar, a blocked grille, an iced evaporator and a failing fan can all trigger it. Check the obvious causes first, then call if the alarm returns.

If the alarm sounds repeatedly after a recent heat wave, the condenser and airflow are especially worth checking.

Drawers, slides and seals

Drawer freezers depend on the drawer front pressing evenly against the gasket. Overfilled drawers, worn slides or a torn gasket leave small gaps. Moist air gets in and turns to frost, often first along the top edge. Replacing a gasket or slide is a common, reasonable repair.

Checks for drawer and column owners

Clear the area in front of the grille. Make sure drawers close fully and are not overloaded. Look for frost on the back wall or the evaporator cover. Note any alarm codes or display messages.

Do not use sharp tools to remove ice or force a frozen drawer open. If ice has built up, unplug the unit, move food to another freezer and let it thaw with towels in place.

Repair or replace a True freezer

Defrost heaters, sensors, fans, gaskets and slides are worth replacing on a True, given the build quality and the cost of replacing a built-in unit. Even sealed-system repairs are often worthwhile. We will tell you what has failed and what the repair involves before you decide.

A panel-ready True freezer also carries custom cabinetry on its face. Replacing the unit can mean refitting that panel to a new model with different dimensions, which is another reason a repair usually wins out on these built-in pieces.

Check that the door or drawer is fully closed and nothing is blocking airflow inside. Clean the front grille if it's dusty. If the alarm continues, move frozen food to another freezer and book a diagnosis. Defrost or fan failures are common causes.

A heavily iced evaporator usually means the defrost cycle isn't working. The defrost heater, termination sensor or control may have failed. A frozen evaporator blocks airflow and warms the freezer. We test each part and replace the one that's failed.

Yes. Drawer gaskets wear from frequent use and can tear at corners. A damaged gasket lets in warm air, causing frost and higher temperatures. Replacement gaskets are model-specific, so we match the part number and install it to seal properly.

In most cases, yes. True units are built with durable components, and fans, sensors, gaskets and defrost parts are reasonable repairs. A sealed system failure is a bigger decision, and we explain the options plainly after diagnosing the actual issue on site.

The unit runs defrost cycles automatically at intervals set by the control. You may notice short periods when the fan stops and water drains. That is normal. If frost builds on the back panel or evaporator cover, or the box warms during defrost and does not recover, the defrost system may need testing.

If it still holds a safe temperature, you can keep using it, but check it with a thermometer. If the box is warming steadily or the alarm keeps sounding, move food to another freezer. We will tell you whether it is safe to keep running based on the diagnosis.

Ice on the track usually means warm air is getting in around the drawer and freezing on cold surfaces, or the defrost drain is overflowing. A worn gasket, a drawer that does not close fully or a blocked drain can all cause it. Clear the ice carefully after unplugging and have the seal and drain checked.

Like any freezer, a True in a hot space has to work harder. Make sure the front grille has clear airflow and is cleaned regularly. Avoid direct sun and enclosed spaces with no air movement. If the unit is not rated for garage use, its performance in summer may suffer.

It tells the control when the evaporator is warm enough to end the defrost cycle. If it fails, defrost may end too early, leaving ice behind, or run too long, warming the freezer. It is a common failure point and an inexpensive part. We test it along with the heater and the control.
