How a Repair Visit Works
What to know about Frigidaire freezers
Frigidaire is one of the best-known names in standalone freezers, with upright frost-free models and manual-defrost chest freezers in many garages, pantries and spare rooms around the valley. Uprights fail most often in the defrost system (heater, thermostat or timer) and the evaporator fan, which leaves frost on the back panel and food softening at the top. Chest freezers are simpler, but start relays and thermostats wear out and lid seals warp. Hot garages make every one of these problems worse. We check defrost components, airflow, seals and the start circuit before quoting.
TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Frigidaire. If this freezer is still under its factory warranty, contact Frigidaire first.
Where Frigidaire freezers usually fail
- Upright frost-free freezer frosts over from a defrost fault
- Evaporator fan failure leaves top shelves warmer than bottom
- Chest freezer lid gasket warps and lets frost build
- Start relay fails and compressor clicks on and off
- Garage heat keeps the freezer running without cycling off

Repairing Frigidaire freezers in the Las Vegas Valley
Frigidaire is one of the most common standalone freezer brands, so we see a lot of them: frost-free uprights, manual-defrost chest freezers, garage-ready models and the tall all-freezer columns that pair with a matching refrigerator column. Each type fails in its own way, and the fix for a frosted upright has little in common with the fix for a silent chest freezer.
A good share of these freezers live in Las Vegas garages, which puts extra stress on the compressor during the long summer months. Part of every visit is looking at where the freezer is installed, how much space it has around the condenser, and whether that location is contributing to the problem.
Upright, chest and column designs
Frost-free uprights use a fan, an evaporator behind the rear panel and a defrost heater, much like a refrigerator's freezer. Manual-defrost uprights put cooling coils in the shelves, which is why those shelves frost over and need periodic defrosting.
Chest freezers wrap the coils around the walls and have very few moving parts, so problems are usually the start relay, the thermostat or the lid gasket. Columns are built-in, with electronic controls and an ice maker on some models, and need more careful access.
What the symptoms tell us
A frost-free upright with frost on the back panel and soft food at the top often has a defrost fault, which can be the heater, the thermostat or the control. A freezer that is completely warm and silent may have a failed start relay or a compressor that will not start.
If a chest freezer runs constantly and still frosts heavily around the lid, the gasket is usually letting in humid air. Very dry Las Vegas air slows that frost compared with humid climates, so heavy frost here is a clear sign of a leak.
Owner checks that are worth doing
Make sure the freezer is level enough that the door or lid closes on its own. Check that it is on its own outlet rather than an extension cord, and that a garage GFCI outlet has not tripped. Clean the condenser area if it is accessible at the bottom or rear.
Do not chip ice with a knife or screwdriver, because puncturing a cooling line ends the freezer's life. If you need to defrost, unplug it and let the ice melt with towels underneath.
Garage heat and repair decisions
Frigidaire sells garage-ready models built to tolerate wider temperature swings. A standard freezer in a hot garage may struggle every summer, and repeated overheating shortens compressor life. Moving it or improving ventilation can matter as much as any part.
Defrost parts, fans, relays and gaskets are inexpensive repairs. A failed compressor or sealed-system leak on a basic chest freezer is usually not worth fixing, while a column freezer can justify more work. We give you the full picture before you decide.

Make sure the door is fully closed and nothing is blocking it, and that the vents inside are not packed with food. Frost on the back panel suggests a defrost problem, and a quiet fan points to an evaporator fan fault. Keep the door shut to hold the cold and schedule a diagnosis soon.
Some Frigidaire freezers are designed for a wider range of garage temperatures, and those are a better match for valley garages, which get very hot in summer. Any freezer will last longer if it has ventilation space and is kept out of direct sun. If yours struggles only in summer, heat may be the main factor.
Unplug it, move food to a cooler, leave the lid open and let the ice melt into towels or out the drain plug if your model has one. Do not chip ice with sharp tools; puncturing the liner can damage refrigerant lines in the walls. Dry the interior fully before plugging it back in.
Constant running often comes from a dirty condenser, a door or lid seal that leaks, heavy frost on the evaporator or a very hot room. Check the seal with a paper strip test and clear dust from the back or bottom. If it still never cycles off, a thermostat or defrost problem may be the cause.
Usually something is in the way or the cabinet has tipped forward. An overfilled door bin, a basket sitting out of its track or a frost ridge on the gasket can hold the door off its seal. Check that the front legs are adjusted so the cabinet leans back slightly. If the gasket itself is torn or flattened, it can be replaced.
On frost-free uprights, frost on the rear panel usually means the defrost system is not clearing the evaporator. The heater, the defrost thermostat or the control can be responsible. We test each to find which part failed, since replacing all three at once wastes money when only one has quit. Clearing the frost by hand only buys a few days.
Zero degrees Fahrenheit is the common target for long-term food storage. Many Frigidaire freezers display a setting rather than an actual temperature, so placing a thermometer in the middle of the cabinet gives a more accurate reading. Check it after the door has stayed closed for a few hours, not right after loading groceries.
Usually. The gasket can be replaced, and lid hinges that have loosened can be adjusted or replaced. A warped lid is less common but can happen if something heavy was stored on top. We check the fit all the way around before ordering a part.
Move it into another freezer or coolers with ice. Keep the door closed as much as possible before the visit, since a full freezer holds cold longer than an empty one. Once the repair is done, let the freezer reach temperature before reloading.
