How a Repair Visit Works
What to know about Kenmore freezers
Most Kenmore upright and chest freezers were built by Frigidaire, and the model number prefix usually confirms it. Upright models commonly develop frost issues from a failed defrost heater, timer or control, a door that is out of alignment, or a worn gasket. Chest freezers are simpler but can lose the start relay, the condenser fan on some models, or the thermostat. Freezers kept in a hot garage work much harder through the summer. During the visit we measure temperatures, check the gasket seal, test the defrost circuit and start components, and confirm the compressor is healthy before quoting.
TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Kenmore. If this freezer is still under its factory warranty, contact Kenmore first.
Where Kenmore freezers usually fail
- Upright door sags so the gasket no longer seals
- Chest freezer thermostat stuck, causing it to run nonstop
- Ice crystals forming on food from humid air leaks
- Defrost timer stuck in defrost so the freezer warms
- Freezer completely silent with the interior light still on

Repairing Kenmore freezers in the Las Vegas Valley
Standalone Kenmore freezers were largely built by Frigidaire, and many carry a 253 prefix on the model tag. The chest models are manual-defrost boxes with a mechanical thermostat and a compressor start device. The upright models come in both manual and frost-free versions, and the frost-free ones add a defrost heater, a defrost thermostat and a timer or control.
In the valley, a lot of these freezers live in the garage, where summer heat makes the compressor run for long stretches and exposes weak start parts and tired door seals. We test the cooling and defrost systems, check the seal and the location, and quote one price before any repair.
Manual-defrost chests versus frost-free uprights
A Kenmore chest freezer has few parts to fail: the thermostat, the start relay or overload, the compressor and the sealed tubing that is often built into the cabinet walls. Frost on the walls is normal and is cleared by defrosting by hand. Heavy frost that returns quickly usually means the lid seal is leaking.
A frost-free upright behaves more like a refrigerator's freezer. If frost spreads across the back panel and food softens, the defrost system is the likely cause.
The garage factor
A freezer in a hot garage runs much longer to hold temperature, and the condenser can only shed so much heat into hot air. Older Kenmore freezers were not always designed for the extremes a valley garage reaches in summer. Start relays and overloads often fail first. A freezer that clicks on and off without running is a typical sign.
Giving the freezer space around it, keeping the condenser clean and avoiding direct sun through a garage window all help.
Signs you can check on a freezer yourself
Shut the lid or door on a dollar-bill-sized strip of paper and tug it. Little or no drag means warm air is getting past the gasket. Check that the freezer is plugged directly into a working outlet, not into an extension cord, and that a garage GFCI outlet has not tripped. Listen for the compressor and feel whether the sides or the back are warm.
Do not chip ice with metal tools, especially in a chest freezer where the tubing can sit just behind the liner. Unplug and let ice melt instead. A small puncture in that tubing usually ends the freezer's life.
Repair or replace an older Kenmore freezer
Thermostats, start relays, gaskets, hinges and defrost parts are inexpensive repairs and often worth doing. A compressor or a leak in the cabinet tubing is far more costly and, on an older chest freezer, is usually where replacement makes more sense. We will check the sealed system first, so you know which kind of repair you are looking at.

Often yes. The door can sag on its hinges over time, especially if it carries heavy items in the shelves. Adjusting the hinge or replacing a worn hinge pin may restore the seal. A gasket that is torn or flattened needs replacement. You can test it by closing the door on a strip of paper; if it slides out easily, the seal is weak.
The light being on means power reaches the unit, but the compressor and fan are not running. A defrost timer stuck in its defrost position, a failed thermostat, or a start relay fault can each cause this. On some models you can advance the timer slightly with a screwdriver to test. If it does not restart, the controls need diagnosis.
Freezer burn and frost on packages usually come from warm, humid air entering through a lid gasket that does not seal or from opening the lid frequently. Chest freezers also need manual defrosting when ice gets thick. Check the gasket for gaps and keep the lid closed. Excess frost can also suggest the unit is cycling irregularly.
Thermostats, relays, timers, gaskets and fans are usually worthwhile, even on an older freezer. A compressor or refrigerant leak is a different decision on a unit more than about fifteen years old. We diagnose first and give you the repair price, so you can decide based on the actual fault.
Extreme garage heat pushes the compressor hard, and a weak start relay or overload may trip and keep the compressor from restarting. The freezer may click every few minutes. Sometimes it recovers once the garage cools, but the weak part tends to fail again. Have the start components tested before you lose a full load of food.
Many garage outlets are GFCI-protected, and a GFCI can trip during a storm or from moisture, cutting power without warning. If your freezer is on one, check it regularly, especially after storms. An electrician can advise on the right outlet setup for a freezer in your garage.
A common rule is to defrost when frost reaches about a quarter inch thick. Thick frost reduces space and makes the freezer work harder. To defrost, move food to coolers, unplug, let the ice melt with the lid open and towels ready, then dry the inside before plugging it back in.
Frost concentrated at the top often means warm, humid air is getting in near the top of the door, through a gasket gap or a door that is not closing fully. A sagging door hinge is common on older uprights. Adjusting the hinge or replacing the gasket usually solves it. Frost spread evenly across the back points more toward a defrost fault.
Zero degrees Fahrenheit is the common target for frozen food. Use a freezer thermometer placed between packages for an accurate reading. If it reads well above zero after the freezer has had time to recover from a door opening, the freezer is not keeping up. Turning the dial colder rarely fixes a failed part.
