How a Repair Visit Works
What to know about Roper freezers
Roper freezers are basic chest and upright models, often used as extra storage in garages and utility rooms. Chest freezers are manual defrost and rely on a sealed lid gasket, a mechanical thermostat and the compressor's start relay. Upright models with automatic defrost add a heater, defrost thermostat and timer. In a hot garage, a freezer runs much longer and faults surface sooner. We check temperature, seal and compressor start parts, test the defrost system on upright units, and give a single repair price.
TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Roper. If this freezer is still under its factory warranty, contact Roper first.
Where Roper freezers usually fail
- Chest lid gasket cracks and frost builds rapidly
- Mechanical thermostat fails and freezer stops cycling
- Start relay fails in summer garage heat
- Upright defrost timer stops and coils frost over
- Freezer runs constantly and won't reach a cold setting

Repairing Roper freezers in the Las Vegas Valley
Roper freezers are basic storage boxes. The chest models are manual defrost, cooled by tubing in the cabinet walls and controlled by a mechanical thermostat. The uprights add shelves and, on frost-free versions, a defrost heater, thermostat and timer. There is no ice maker, no water line and no complex board, which keeps the list of likely failures short.
What makes Roper freezers fail in the valley is mostly location. A freezer in a garage that bakes all summer runs almost nonstop, and start relays, overloads and lid seals give out sooner. A visit covers box temperature, seal condition and the compressor's start components, plus the defrost circuit on frost-free uprights, and you approve a single price before any work.
Clicking, humming and silence
A Roper freezer that clicks every few minutes without the compressor running usually has a failed start relay or overload, or a compressor that cannot start. A freezer that hums constantly but never gets cold may have a sealed-system problem or a condenser that cannot shed heat. Silence with the light on, on an upright, often points to the thermostat or a wiring connection.
Each of those sounds tells us where to begin, so it helps to note what you hear before the visit.
Lids, hinges and frost
On a chest freezer, the lid gasket and hinges keep warm, humid air out. A cracked gasket or a lid that does not fall closed lets air in, and frost builds quickly near the opening. Replacing the gasket or the hinge springs is inexpensive and often solves a frost problem without touching the cooling system.
Owner checks for Roper freezers
Confirm the cord goes straight into a live wall outlet, with no power strip in between, and press the reset on a garage GFCI if it has tripped. Close the lid on a strip of paper to test the seal. Look at the thermostat dial, which can be bumped while loading food. Leave space around the freezer for air.
Do not chip frost with a knife or screwdriver. In a chest freezer, the cooling tubes run just behind the inner wall.
When a Roper freezer is not worth fixing
Thermostats, start relays, gaskets and hinges are worth replacing. A compressor or a leak in the built-in tubing on a basic chest freezer usually costs more than a new one. We test the sealed system early in the visit so you are not paying for small parts on a freezer that needs a much larger repair.

Rapid frost usually means warm air is getting in through a worn lid gasket or a lid that doesn't close flat. Check the gasket for cracks and make sure nothing holds the lid open. Opening it often in dry summer heat adds some frost, but heavy buildup suggests a seal problem.
A freezer in a very hot garage runs longer and harder, and some models aren't rated for those conditions. Leave space around it for ventilation and keep it out of direct sun. If it still can't hold temperature, a failing relay or thermostat may be making the heat problem worse.
If the compressor runs but the cabinet isn't cold, the thermostat, condenser airflow or the sealed system could be involved. Clean dust from the condenser area first. If cooling doesn't improve, we test the thermostat and check for signs of a refrigerant problem.
Thermostats, relays and gaskets are inexpensive, and those repairs are usually worth it. A compressor or refrigerant leak on an older basic freezer often isn't. We explain the diagnosis clearly so you can decide based on the real problem rather than a guess.
Keep the lid or door closed as much as possible, since a full freezer holds cold longer. Move the most valuable items to another freezer or coolers with ice. Use a thermometer to check food temperature. Food that has thawed and stayed warm for long periods should be thrown out, following food safety guidance.
It should sit level and solid on the floor so the lid closes evenly and the seal works. A freezer tilted toward the back can leave a gap at the front of the lid. If the floor is uneven, shims under the base can help. A lid that still does not seal may need new hinges or a gasket.
Not necessarily. In a hot garage, a freezer can run most of the day just to hold temperature. If it still holds near zero, it may be working as designed under heavy load. If it runs constantly and temperatures rise, the condenser, start parts, seal or sealed system may be at fault and should be checked.
It is usually a dial on the inside wall or on the outside near the base, depending on the model. Turning it to a colder setting can help in heat, but it will not fix a mechanical fault. If turning the dial produces no click or change, the thermostat may have failed.
Yes. Unplug it, empty it and move it upright if you can. If it has to be laid on its side for a short time, let it stand upright for several hours before plugging it back in, so oil can drain back to the compressor. Check the manual for your model's guidance.
