How a Repair Visit Works
What to know about Maytag freezers
Maytag sells upright and chest freezers, and a lot of them end up in garages around the valley, where summer heat pushes them hard. Upright frost-free models commonly develop defrost problems, such as a failed heater, thermostat or timer, that leave frost on the evaporator and warm the cabinet. Chest freezers are simpler but can suffer from start relay failures, door gasket leaks and condenser issues. During a visit we measure the cabinet temperature, check the start components and fan, inspect the gasket seal, and confirm whether the sealed system is healthy before recommending any repair.
TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Maytag. If this freezer is still under its factory warranty, contact Maytag first.

Repairing Maytag freezers in the Las Vegas Valley
Stand-alone Maytag freezers come in two very different builds. Upright models are frost-free, with an evaporator behind a rear panel, a fan and a timed or adaptive defrost. Chest models are usually manual defrost, with the cooling tubing wrapped inside the cabinet walls and no fan in the food space.
That difference decides almost everything about the repair. An upright can fail in several places along the defrost and airflow path, while a chest freezer's common faults sit mostly in the compressor start parts and the lid seal. Many of these freezers live in garages, where summer heat adds load to every part of the system and exposes weak components sooner.
Uprights: watch the frost pattern
On a frost-free upright, the back panel hides the evaporator. If frost builds there in a solid sheet, the defrost heater, terminator or control is not doing its job. Over days, that frost blocks airflow and the top shelves warm first.
Light frost on packages near the door is more often a gasket or door-closure issue, especially on a freezer that is opened often or sits slightly off level.
Chest freezers: simpler, but not immune
With no fan or defrost heater, a chest freezer depends on the compressor, the start relay and the condenser, which is often built into the outer walls. A unit that clicks every few minutes, warms, then clicks again usually has a start-component problem.
Manual-defrost chests also need occasional defrosting by the owner. Ice thicker than about a quarter inch insulates the walls and makes the compressor work longer.
Owner checks and safe limits
Check that the freezer has a few inches of clearance at the back and sides, and that the power cord is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord. Clean dust from any visible condenser grille. A dollar bill closed in the door should resist being pulled out all the way around the gasket.
Do not chip ice with sharp tools. Puncturing a wall or evaporator tube turns a defrost job into a sealed-system repair.
Repair visit and the replace question
We measure cabinet temperature, test start components, check fan and defrost parts on uprights, and confirm the compressor and sealed system are healthy. You get one price before any work. Relays, gaskets, fans and defrost parts are routine. A sealed-system leak on an older freezer is usually the point where replacement wins, and we will say so.

Frost-free uprights melt their frost on a timed defrost cycle. If the heater, defrost thermostat or timer fails, frost keeps building on the evaporator until airflow stops and the cabinet warms. A door that is not sealing adds humidity and speeds this up. Check that the door closes fully and the gasket is intact. If it does, the defrost circuit needs testing.
Chest freezers tolerate heat better than most refrigerators, but extreme summer garage temperatures still cause long run times and extra wear. Leave space around the unit for airflow, keep the condenser area clean, and avoid placing it against a wall that gets afternoon sun. If the freezer only struggles on the hottest days, it may be running beyond its design range.
A repeated click every few minutes often comes from the compressor's start relay or overload trying to start the compressor and failing. Sometimes the relay itself is faulty, which is an inexpensive repair. Sometimes the compressor is seizing. Testing tells the difference. Move food to another freezer or a cooler while you wait, because the cabinet will warm steadily.
Keep the lid or door closed as much as possible, since a full freezer stays cold for a day or more if left shut. If the cabinet is already warm, move items to coolers with ice or another freezer. After a defrost repair, the freezer may need several hours to pull down to temperature, so plan to return food once it is cold again.
It should run more in a warm room and after the door has been open, but it should still cycle off. Constant running with rising temperatures suggests a dusty condenser, a weak fan, or a frosted evaporator. In a garage during summer, longer run times are expected, but warming food is not.
Yes. Most uprights are set slightly back-heavy so the door swings closed on its own. If the front sits low, the door can drift open a fraction and let warm air in, which shows up as frost near the door and on packages. Adjusting the front leveling legs is often the whole fix.
Some chest freezers use the outer walls to shed heat, so warmth there is normal. Sweating usually means humid air is reaching cold surfaces through a poor lid seal. Our summers are dry, but monsoon weeks and garages near a laundry can be humid enough to show it. A worn lid gasket is the common fix.
A ticking or scraping sound from the back wall usually means ice has grown into the fan blade, which is a sign of a defrost problem. A buzz from the bottom rear can come from the compressor start relay. Either is worth checking before the freezer warms up.
Not usually. The frost pattern on an upright tells us a lot about what failed, so leave it as it is unless food safety requires otherwise. For a manual-defrost chest freezer, keep it running and closed; we will advise on defrosting once we know the cause.
