What to know about Hotpoint freezers

Hotpoint freezers include manual-defrost uprights and simple chest models. Many manual-defrost uprights, Hotpoint included, run refrigerant tubing through the shelves themselves, which means a careless ice scraper can puncture a coil, one of the few freezer failures that is rarely worth repairing. Most other calls are a thermostat that has stopped cycling, a start relay that fails so the compressor will not run, and a door that no longer seals because the unit is not tilted back slightly. A visit includes a temperature check, start relay and thermostat tests, and a look at door alignment.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Hotpoint. If this freezer is still under its factory warranty, contact Hotpoint first.

Where Hotpoint freezers usually fail

  • Shelf coil punctured while chipping away built-up ice
  • Thermostat stuck, leaving the freezer warm or running nonstop
  • Start relay failing so the compressor clicks without starting
  • Door not sealing because the unit sits unlevel
  • Ice buildup thick enough to block the door closing

Repairing Hotpoint freezers in the Las Vegas Valley

Hotpoint freezers are simple manual-defrost uprights and chest units with mechanical thermostats. There is no fan to fail on most of them and no defrost heater, which keeps the parts list short. When one stops freezing, the cause is usually in the thermostat, the compressor start parts, the door seal or the condenser.

Many of these freezers sit in garages, where they hold extra groceries, hunting meat or bulk purchases. That location is the most important factor in how hard the freezer works and how long its parts last. Garage freezers also face dust that coats the condenser. Summer heat in a closed garage is hard on any freezer.

Chest freezers versus uprights

Chest freezers lose less cold air when opened, since cold air stays low in the cabinet. Uprights are easier to organize but can lose more cold air each time the door opens, and their doors depend on gravity and gaskets to seal. Diagnosis differs too: chest units hide their condenser in the walls, while uprights often have a visible coil on the back.

Garage freezers in a desert summer

A closed garage here can reach temperatures well above what most household freezers are designed for. The compressor runs longer, the cabinet walls warm up, and a marginal start relay or thermostat that would last years indoors can fail in a summer.

If your freezer is in the garage, keep it out of direct sunlight, leave space around it for airflow, and avoid placing it beside a water heater or furnace.

What owners can check

Check that the freezer is plugged directly into a working outlet, not a power strip or a tripped GFCI. Look for ice on the lid or door edge that keeps it from sealing. Confirm the thermostat dial was not turned down accidentally.

Do not chip ice with sharp tools, and do not use heat guns inside the cabinet. Both can damage the liner or refrigerant lines.

After a power outage

A full Hotpoint freezer can hold food frozen for some time during a power cut if the door stays shut. When power returns, the compressor should start within a few minutes. If it clicks repeatedly without starting, or the freezer stays warm after a few hours, the start relay or compressor may have been strained by the outage and needs testing.

When repair makes sense

Thermostats, start relays, door gaskets and hinges are reasonable repairs on a Hotpoint freezer. A refrigerant leak or failed compressor usually makes replacement the better value, especially on an older chest unit. We give you that answer clearly so you can protect your food quickly.

Unplug it, move food to coolers and leave the door open with towels underneath. A pan of hot water on a shelf speeds things up. Never use a knife, ice pick or screwdriver to chip the ice, because the refrigerant tubing runs through the shelves and punctures easily. Once dry, plug it back in and let it cool down before reloading.

Check the thermostat setting first. Then look at the condenser: a dusty coil or a unit pushed tight against a wall runs longer. A door that does not seal causes constant running along with frost. If none of those explain it, the thermostat may be stuck closed or the sealed system may be losing capacity, which we test on site.

When the cabinet is not tilted slightly backward, the door may not swing shut on its own and can bounce open. Adjust the front leveling legs so the front sits a little higher than the back. Also check that baskets and packages are not blocking the door. A door left open even slightly lets in moisture and causes rapid frost.

In principle, a sealed-system repair can patch the leak, evacuate the system and recharge it. In practice, on a basic upright freezer, the labor usually makes replacement the better choice. We first confirm whether it is actually a puncture, because a failed start relay or thermostat can look similar from the outside.

A freezer should hold at or below 0°F. Use a freezer thermometer placed in the middle of the cabinet. If it reads well above that after a day without many door openings, the freezer needs attention. Readings taken right after loading groceries or a long door opening will run high, so give it time.

Condensation on the cabinet can occur in humid weather, but it is uncommon in the valley's dry air. Sweating along the lid edge often means a leaking gasket. On the sides, it can point to a refrigerant line issue. In a hot garage, the cabinet can sweat near a weak seal even in dry weather.

If it is still holding a safe temperature, yes. Keep the door closed as much as possible. If it is warming, move food to coolers or another freezer until we diagnose it. Avoid opening it repeatedly just to check. A cooler with ice packs works for a day or two.

Frost at the top usually means warm air is getting in through a gasket gap there, often because the door has sagged or the unit is not tilted back slightly. Leveling or a new gasket typically solves it. Checking the gasket with a sheet of paper helps.

Large amounts of warm food raise the cabinet temperature and make the compressor run harder. Cool food first when you can, and spread new items out instead of stacking them in one spot. Use shallow containers to speed cooling. Large batches freeze faster and more safely when portioned first.
