What to know about LG ranges

LG ranges are sold as freestanding and slide-in models in gas, electric, induction and dual fuel versions, many with ProBake convection and a large oven cavity. A range combines a cooktop, an oven and a main control board in one chassis, so a single symptom such as a dead display can come from several places. Common repairs include the main control or display board, oven elements and the temperature sensor, convection fans, door locks, and the cooktop surface parts. We diagnose the whole unit on the visit, including the outlet or gas supply, before recommending a repair.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with LG. If this range is still under its factory warranty, contact LG first.

Where LG ranges usually fail

  • Range completely dead from a failed control board or tripped breaker
  • Oven preheating slowly because of a weak element or igniter
  • ProBake convection fan failing or running noisily
  • Slide-in range rocking after the anti-tip bracket was left off
  • Display error codes from sensor or door lock faults

Repairing LG ranges in the Las Vegas Valley

An LG range is one chassis with several systems: a cooktop, an oven cavity, a main control board, a display, a power cord or gas connection, and on many models a convection system and an InstaView window that lights up with a knock. Because they share power and control, one problem can show up in several places. A failed board can kill both the oven and the electric burners, and a supply fault can mimic a part failure.

We diagnose the whole range rather than one part. That includes confirming the outlet, cord or gas supply before opening the unit, reading any stored codes, and checking both the oven and the surface before deciding what failed. Once the cause is clear, the quote covers parts and labor together, and nothing is replaced until you approve it.

Dual fuel and slide-in models

A dual-fuel LG uses gas burners on top and an electric oven below, so it needs both a gas connection and a high-voltage outlet. If the burners work and the oven is dead, the electric side, including the cord, terminal block and breaker, is checked first.

Slide-in ranges sit flush with the counter and controls are at the front. Getting behind one for a cord or gas issue means sliding it out carefully without scratching the counter edge or the floor. We plan that before we start.

Controls, displays and lockouts

LG ranges have a control lock that disables the keypad, which can look like a failed panel. Holding the lock button for a few seconds usually releases it. A display that is completely dark, or one that shows codes on power-up, may point to the board, a sensor or the door lock circuit. We read the code, then confirm with a meter.

Power surges can damage a range control, especially during summer storms. A surge protector does not fit every installation, but a range on a damaged outlet should be checked.

Before you call

Check the breaker, which for an electric or dual-fuel range is a double breaker. Try the control lock. If gas burners will not light, confirm other gas appliances work. Make sure the range has not been pulled away from the wall far enough to disconnect its anti-tip bracket.

Do not remove the rear panel or work on the terminal block yourself. Range circuits carry enough current to cause serious injury.

Repair value across the whole unit

Most LG range repairs, including elements, igniters, sensors, door locks and convection fans, are worthwhile. A main board on a newer slide-in is often worth replacing given what a comparable range costs to buy and install. When a range needs a board, a glass top and an oven element at once, we will price both options so you can compare.

Check the breaker for the range, and for electric models make sure both halves of the double breaker are on. On a gas range, confirm the 120-volt outlet behind the unit has power by plugging in a lamp if you can reach it safely. If power is present but nothing works, the control board or a thermal fuse is a likely cause.

Gas ovens light with a hot surface igniter that must reach a certain current before the safety valve opens. As igniters age, they glow but draw less current, so the oven lights late or not at all. This is one of the most common gas oven repairs and is usually worthwhile on a range in good condition.

The bracket keeps the range from tipping forward if someone leans or stands on the open door. Slide-in ranges are often reinstalled during remodels and the bracket gets left behind. We check that it is engaged during service, because it protects children and guests as well as the appliance.

Often it is, as long as the rest of the range is in good condition. The control board is a single part and usually a straightforward swap once we confirm it is the actual fault, since a bad sensor or lock can make a board look faulty. We test those first and give you one price before replacing anything.

If the display has power but the keypad does nothing, check the control lock first. If it is not locked, the keypad membrane or the control board may be at fault. If the oven and burners on an electric range are both dead with the display on, one side of the double breaker or the terminal block may be the problem.

Yes. A dual-fuel range needs a gas line with a shutoff for the cooktop and a dedicated electric outlet sized for the oven, usually the same high-voltage type used by an all-electric range. A standard household outlet will not work. If you are switching from gas to dual fuel, the outlet may need to be added by an electrician.

The InstaView light uses a knock sensor and the oven light. Light knocks near the center of the glass usually work best. If it never responds, the bulb, the knock sensor or its wiring may have failed. It does not affect cooking, so it can wait if the oven and burners work normally.

A breaker that trips under heat load often points to a shorted element, a damaged wire, or a loose connection at the terminal block. Repeated resets can make the damage worse. Leave the breaker off, avoid using the range, and have the elements and wiring tested. Sometimes the breaker itself is weak, which an electrician can confirm.

The diagnosis follows the same order, from supply to controls to the failed part, but the parts differ. Gas ranges involve igniters, valves and safety checks for leaks. Electric ranges involve elements, switches, relays and high-current wiring. Dual-fuel units involve both, so the visit takes a little longer.
