What to know about Maytag dishwashers

Maytag dishwashers are known for their stainless steel PowerBlast and Dual Power filtration designs, and they share many parts with other Whirlpool-built machines. Typical faults include a drain pump that hums without emptying, a clogged filter assembly causing poor washing, a failed heating element or thermostat that leaves dishes wet, and a door latch that will not register closed. Scale from hard water also builds up in the spray arms and inlet valve. On a visit we run the service test cycle, inspect the sump and filters, and check the inlet valve, pump and heater before giving you a single repair price.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Maytag. If this dishwasher is still under its factory warranty, contact Maytag first.

Where Maytag dishwashers usually fail

  • Water remains in the tub bottom after the cycle ends
  • Dishes come out gritty from a clogged dual filter
  • Heating element fails and leaves dishes wet and cool
  • Door latch will not register, so the cycle never starts
  • Spray arm holes blocked by hard water scale deposits

Repairing Maytag dishwashers in the Las Vegas Valley

Maytag dishwashers are built on the same tall-tub Whirlpool platform as several other brands, with a manual-clean filter in the floor, a combined wash and drain motor assembly underneath, and a door-mounted control. Many carry the PowerBlast cycle for tough pans, a third rack on newer models and a stainless interior. Most install under a standard counter and hook to the sink drain or disposal.

Because the filter must be cleaned by hand, a large share of poor-cleaning calls trace back to a filter that has never come out. That is the first thing we look at, but we also know which faults are mechanical and need parts, and we test before we decide which is which.

The manual filter design and what it changes

Older dishwashers ground up food with a chopper. Most current Maytags rely on a two-stage filter in the tub floor instead, which is quieter but traps debris that has to be rinsed out. When it clogs, the wash pump starves for water, spray pressure drops and the drain slows.

That means a complaint like "it does not clean anymore" can be a five-minute filter rinse or a failing wash motor. Measuring water level and watching spray arm rotation during a test cycle tells us which.

Before you call

Twist out the upper and lower filters and rinse them under the tap. Check the drain hose under the sink for a kink, and if you have a disposal, confirm the knockout plug was removed when the dishwasher was installed. Run the kitchen tap hot before starting a cycle so the first fill is not cold.

Do not remove the toe kick panel while the unit is powered. The wiring and water connections behind it carry line voltage and supply pressure.

Hard water and the Maytag wash system

Valley water leaves scale on the spray arm jets, the heater and the inlet valve screen. Over time, that shows up as cloudy glasses, a slow fill or a heater that runs longer. Rinse aid and a periodic descaling cycle slow the buildup. When the inlet valve screen is crusted, the valve usually gets replaced rather than cleaned.

Our visit, step by step

We run the service test to step through fill, wash, drain and heat, then pull the filter and inspect the sump. Pump, valve, heater and door latch are tested electrically. If the unit must slide out to reach a part, we disconnect water and power properly and reinstall it level.

You receive a single price for parts and labor before anything is replaced. Pumps, valves, latches and heaters are routine repairs; a corroded tub or failed control on an older unit may tip the decision toward replacement.

Maytag Dishwasher Repair Questions

Still have questions?

We cover 15 ZIP codes in Enterprise, Spring Valley, Paradise and southern Henderson.

Most current Maytag models use a removable dual filter at the bottom of the tub. Turn the upper cylinder counterclockwise, lift it out, then remove the lower flat filter. Rinse both under warm water with a soft brush, avoiding wire brushes. Check the sump opening for glass or bone fragments. A neglected filter is one of the most common reasons for poor cleaning and slow draining.

That film is usually mineral scale from the valley's hard water rather than detergent. Use a rinse aid, keep the dispenser full, and run a cleaner made for dishwasher scale every month or so. If the film persists and dishes also come out cool, the heater may not be working, which affects drying and how well detergent works. That part can be tested on a visit.

Unplug the unit or switch off its circuit first. Clean the filter, then check the drain hose loop under the sink and the garbage disposal knockout if the dishwasher was just connected to a new disposal. If water still stays, a jammed or failed drain pump is likely. Pump replacement is a common and usually worthwhile repair on Maytag machines.

Control boards do fail, but they are blamed more often than they deserve. A dead display can come from a bad door latch switch, a thermal fuse on the board, or a wiring fault at the door hinge. We test the inputs before ordering a board, because a board is one of the costlier parts and replacing it unnecessarily wastes time and money.

Too much detergent with soft-feeling water leaves a film, and too little with hard water leaves spots. Powder that has clumped in a humid cabinet may not dissolve and leaves residue on the top rack. A detergent cup that stays shut points to the latch or a blocked lid, which is a mechanical fault we can fix.

A new grinding or rattling sound often means something hard, like a glass chip or a bone, has reached the pump area. A steady hum with no water moving can point to a seized pump. Stop running it and check the filter area first. If the noise remains, have it looked at before the motor is damaged.

Not in any meaningful way. It uses hotter water and higher spray pressure for heavily soiled loads, but it runs the same pump and heater as every other cycle. Using it daily simply means longer run times. If the dishwasher only struggles on that cycle, mention it, because it can hint at a weak heater.

The control needs a closed door latch signal before it starts the cycle. A worn latch, a misaligned strike or a switch inside the latch can all block it. Control lockout is another possibility, so check the panel for a lock icon first. If that is not it, the latch is a common and modest repair.

Yes. Some repairs, such as the drain pump or inlet valve, are reachable from the front, while others require sliding the unit out. We disconnect the water line, drain hose and power, do the repair, then reinstall it level and check for leaks before we leave.
