What to know about Admiral stoves

On gas Admiral stoves, the burners use spark ignition and simple open or sealed burner heads. A burner that will not light, lights only with a match, or burns with a weak or yellow flame is the usual call. Clogged burner ports from boil-overs, a cracked igniter, a spark module that has failed or a burner head that is not seated correctly are the common causes. Constant clicking often follows a spill that soaked the switches. If you smell gas when the burners are off, shut off the supply valve and leave. Otherwise, we test ignition and gas flow burner by burner on site.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Admiral. If this stove is still under its factory warranty, contact Admiral first.

Where Admiral stoves usually fail

  • Gas burner sparking but not lighting after a boil-over
  • Igniter cracked so the burner needs a match
  • Yellow, weak flame from clogged burner ports
  • Constant clicking after a spill soaked the switches
  • Burner head not seated, producing an uneven flame

Repairing Admiral stoves in the Las Vegas Valley

An Admiral stove in a valley home is usually a 30-inch freestanding gas model with four burners, porcelain drip bowls or a sealed cooktop, and cast iron or wire grates. This page covers the burner side. The oven side has its own page, because the two halves fail for different reasons.

Admiral stoves are built simply, which is a strength. There is a spark module, one switch per knob, a gas valve per burner and a manifold feeding them all. Most problems come from what lands on the cooktop: grease, boil-overs, cleaning spray and food debris that work their way into ports and switches.

Open burners and sealed burners

Older Admiral stoves use open burners under a lift-up top, with drip bowls catching spills around each one. Newer models seal the burner to the cooktop so spills stay on top. Open burners clog faster but are easy to reach. Sealed burners keep spills out of the cabinet, but debris collects around the igniter and the cap.

Either way, the flame depends on clean ports and a burner head or cap sitting exactly where it belongs.

Reading the flame

A healthy flame is mostly blue with even cones all around the burner. Yellow, floppy flames suggest a dirty burner, a misaligned head or a gas-to-air mix problem. A flame that lifts away from the burner and roars can mean the gas pressure or orifice is wrong, which is common after a fuel conversion done incorrectly.

Soot on pots is a sign of incomplete burning and should be checked rather than tolerated.

Cleaning that solves many calls

With the burners off and cool, lift off grates and caps, wash the caps in warm soapy water and dry them completely. Clear clogged ports with a straight pin. On open burners, lift the cooktop and wipe crumbs and grease from the burner tubes and the area under them.

Avoid spraying liquid cleaner directly at the knobs or the igniters, which is the most common cause of constant clicking. If you smell gas while the burners are off, shut the stove's gas valve, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.

When parts need replacing

A cracked ceramic igniter, a spark module that no longer fires, a switch that sticks closed or a valve that turns stiffly are all standard Admiral stove repairs. These parts are widely available and inexpensive.

Burner work alone almost never justifies replacing the stove. If the oven is failing too, we price both halves together so you can decide with the full picture.

If you hear clicking but no flame, the burner ports may be clogged or the burner head misaligned. If there is no clicking at that burner, the igniter may be cracked or the wire disconnected. Clean the burner head with a stiff brush, let it dry fully and reseat it. If it still will not light, we test the igniter and spark module.

A healthy flame is mostly blue. A yellow, lazy flame usually means the burner is not getting the right mix of air and gas, often from clogged ports, a misaligned burner head or debris in the orifice. It can produce soot and carbon monoxide. Clean and reseat the burner, and if it stays yellow, have it inspected.

Constant clicking usually happens after a spill or cleaning soaks a burner switch or igniter. Turn the stove off, unplug it if possible and let it dry thoroughly for several hours. If clicking continues once everything is dry, a switch has likely failed and needs replacement. Avoid spraying cleaner directly on the knobs and control area.

If the smell is strong, do not light anything or operate switches. Leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. For a faint smell near the range, make sure all knobs are fully off and shut the gas valve behind the stove. Once the utility confirms it is safe, we can diagnose a valve, connector or burner issue.

With no power the spark module cannot fire, but the burner valves still work. Hold a long match or lighter at the burner ports first, then turn the knob to light, and the flame should catch right away. If it does not light within a few seconds, turn the knob off and let the gas clear before trying again.

No. Foil can block airflow around open burners, trap heat and reflect it into the cooktop and wiring. It can also cause gas burners to burn poorly. Use drip bowls made for the stove and clean them regularly. If a bowl is badly stained or warped, replace it rather than covering it.

That burner may have clogged ports, a misplaced cap or head, or a weak igniter. Each burner has its own valve and orifice, so a fault on one burner rarely affects the others. Clean and reseat the cap first. If it still lights slowly or unevenly, have the igniter and orifice checked.

Yes. Pulling a stove out can strain or kink the flexible gas connector. If you smell gas after moving it, shut off the gas valve and leave the house. Do not use electrical switches near the stove. Any connector that is old, kinked or damaged should be replaced.

In most cases it is the igniter electrode, which cracks or gets coated, or the burner switch on that valve stem. Sometimes the spark module has failed and none of the burners spark. A clogged burner orifice is less common but can stop gas from reaching the burner. We test each before replacing anything.
