What to know about Viking stoves
When owners call about a Viking stove, they usually mean the burner section of a Viking range or rangetop. These are high-output sealed burners with spark ignition and automatic reignition, often alongside a griddle or char-grill. Constant clicking is the classic complaint, usually caused by moisture after cleaning or a failing spark module. Burners that will not light, weak simmer flames and uneven flames from misaligned caps are also common. Griddle and grill sections have their own ignition and controls. We test ignition, gas flow and each cooking section individually before giving one price for the repair.
TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Viking. If this stove is still under its factory warranty, contact Viking first.
Where Viking stoves usually fail
- Constant clicking from moisture in a burner switch
- Spark module failure stopping several burners from lighting
- Weak simmer flame going out with repeated reignition

Repairing Viking stoves in the Las Vegas Valley
On a Viking, the stove is the top of a professional-style range: high-output sealed burners under heavy cast-iron grates, often with a griddle or char-grill section, all run from knobs on the front. Viking 5 Series and 7 Series ranges use SureSpark ignition with automatic reignition, and many burners include VariSimmer for very gentle heat.
This page covers that surface. The burner section has its own valves, ignition switches, electrodes, spark module and gas manifold, separate from the oven below. A stovetop problem rarely means the oven is failing too, although we look at the whole range while we are there and tell you if anything else needs attention.
How Viking ignition and reignition work
Each burner valve has a small switch that tells the spark module to fire. The module sparks at every electrode on the surface, and a sensing circuit watches for flame at each burner. If a flame is lost, the module sparks again. That is useful in a busy kitchen, but it means any flame problem turns into clicking.
When a switch gets wet, the module sparks constantly. When an electrode cracks, the spark leaks to the burner base and the burner will not light.
VariSimmer and low-flame trouble
VariSimmer burners hold a very small flame at the lowest setting. Partly blocked ports, a cap slightly off center or a worn valve can make that small flame unstable, so it goes out and the reignition system starts clicking. Food residue in the ports is the most common cause, followed by caps knocked out of position by heavy grates during cleaning.
We check port condition, cap alignment and gas pressure before replacing a valve.
What owners can safely do first
Let burner heads and caps dry fully after cleaning, then seat them flat and centered. Use a soft brush, not a toothpick, to clear ports. Make sure grates sit properly and do not touch the caps.
Do not adjust air shutters, regulators or gas pressure. If you smell gas, turn off the supply valve and call the gas utility before using the stove again.
Parts, repair and value
We test switches, electrodes, the spark module, valves and gas pressure, along with griddle or char-grill burners and thermostats. Gas connections are leak-tested after any repair. Viking parts usually come through specialist suppliers, and we confirm availability before quoting one price.
Given the cost of a professional range, surface repairs on a Viking are almost always worth doing.

Viking burners use reignition, which sparks if the flame is not detected. Continuous clicking after lighting usually means moisture in a switch, a misaligned cap that affects flame sensing or a failing spark module. Dry the burners and reseat the caps. If clicking continues, we test the switches and module.
Griddle sections have their own burner or element and thermostat. Uneven heat can come from a partially clogged burner, a failing thermostat or poor ignition. Clean the griddle and burner area and check whether the section lights fully. If it remains uneven, the burner and thermostat need testing.
Remove grates and caps, clean them with warm soapy water and dry them completely before reinstalling. Avoid soaking the area around the igniters and switches. Make sure caps sit flat and centered. Most ignition problems after cleaning come from moisture or caps that are not seated properly.
High-output burners can sound louder than standard burners at full flame. A flame that lifts off the burner, roars unusually or turns yellow may indicate incorrect gas pressure, a misaligned cap or debris. Turn it down and check the cap. If the flame remains unusual, have the burner and gas supply inspected.
Viking ranges can usually be converted with the correct conversion kit for the model. It involves changing burner orifices, adjusting the regulator and setting low flames. Because it affects combustion safety, it should be done by a qualified technician, and the conversion should be noted on the range.
A yellow or orange flame often means incomplete combustion from a blocked port, a misaligned cap or an air shutter setting. Dust and cleaning residue can also cause brief yellow tips. A persistent yellow flame should be checked, since it can produce soot and carbon monoxide.
Heavy cast-iron grates darken and discolor with heat and use. It does not affect performance. Regular cleaning keeps buildup from interfering with burner caps. If a grate coating is chipping badly, a replacement grate may be available. Never soak hot grates in cold water, which can crack the enamel.
A slow-lighting burner often has a dirty or cracked electrode, a misaligned cap or partly blocked ports. Clean and dry the parts and reseat the cap. If it still lights slowly, the electrode or valve switch needs testing with a meter.
Yes. A new or freshly cleaned griddle often smokes as oil or protective coatings burn off. Season the plate according to the manual. Persistent smoke after that usually points to residue buildup or a thermostat set higher than you need.
