What to know about JennAir stoves

On JennAir stoves the cooking surface gets most of our attention, whether it is the sealed high-output gas burners of a professional-style model, a glass top with dual-ring elements, or the downdraft vent built into the middle of the cooktop on certain designs. Gas burners with both high output and a low simmer depend on clean igniters and properly seated caps. Dual and triple-ring electric elements use switches that can fail on one ring only. A stove visit covers each burner, the ignition system, the downdraft if present, and the gas shutoff and connection.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with JennAir. If this stove is still under its factory warranty, contact JennAir first.

Where JennAir stoves usually fail

  • Pro-style gas burner simmer flame going out on low
  • Igniter sparking but burner caps sitting off center
  • Built-in downdraft not pulling smoke off the cooktop
  • Gas burner knob stiff because the valve stem is gummed

Repairing JennAir stoves in the Las Vegas Valley

This page is about the top of a JennAir stove, where most of the daily wear happens. Pro-style gas models carry heavy grates and sealed burners that range from a hard boil to a gentle simmer. Electric models use glass tops with dual or triple-ring elements that let one burner serve both a small saucepan and a wide skillet. A few designs add a downdraft vent right between the burners.

Each of those surfaces has its own weak spots. Gas burners depend on clean ports and correctly seated caps, multi-ring elements depend on switches that route power to each ring, and a center downdraft collects grease in a spot that is easy to forget about until airflow drops. Knowing which surface you have tells us where to start.

Sealed gas burners on pro-style models

JennAir pro-style burners are designed to run very hot and also hold a low flame. That low end is sensitive. A slightly clogged port, a cap sitting a few degrees off center or residue on the electrode can let the flame lift and go out when turned down.

Cleaning and seating solve many of these calls. When they do not, we look at the valve's low-flame adjustment and the gas pressure to that burner.

Multi-ring radiant elements

On a dual or triple-ring element, a selector or a combined switch decides which rings receive power. If one ring stops heating while the others glow, the fault is usually in that switch or in the wiring to the ring, not the whole element.

We measure each ring and the switch outputs to confirm. Replacing the correct part avoids paying for an element that still works.

Knobs and valves that turn hard

A stiff gas knob usually means grease and cooked-on residue have worked down around the valve stem. Forcing it can break the stem or the knob insert. Cleaning around the stem sometimes helps, but a valve that stays stiff should be lubricated or replaced by a technician with the gas shut off.

On electric models, a knob that spins freely without changing heat often has a worn insert or a broken switch shaft.

Home checks and limits

With everything cool and off, lift off the caps, scrub the port slots gently with a nylon brush, and let every piece air-dry before it goes back. Check that the cap seats flat with no rocking. On glass tops, test each ring setting and note which one fails.

Do not use sharp tools in burner ports, spray cleaner into knob openings or keep clicking a burner that smells of gas without lighting. Shut the gas off and ventilate instead.

Low simmer flames are small and sensitive to cap position, clogged ports and drafts. Clean the burner head, make sure the cap sits flat, and check that a downdraft or ceiling fan is not blowing it out. Many pro-style burners reignite automatically if the flame goes out. If it keeps failing, the valve or igniter may need attention.

Dual elements have separate circuits for the inner and outer rings. If the outer ring does not heat when selected, the element, its switch or the wiring between them may be faulty. We test each one with a meter. Turn off power at the breaker before anyone lifts the glass top.

It is usually behind the stove or in an adjacent cabinet. When the valve handle runs parallel to the pipe, gas is on; when it is perpendicular, gas is off. Find it before you ever need it. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas company from outside rather than hunting for the valve indoors.

Grease and spills around the valve stem can make a knob stiff. Pull the knob straight off and clean the area with a damp cloth, without spraying cleaner into the opening. If the knob is still stiff, the gas valve itself may be failing, and a stiff valve should be replaced, not forced.

A flame that lifts or floats above the burner can come from a cap that is not seated, too much air in the mix or a gas pressure problem. It often shows on the highest setting. Reseat the cap first. If the flame still lifts, the burner and supply should be checked, since an unstable flame can go out unexpectedly.

That is exactly what the ring selector does. On many models you press a button or turn the knob past a detent to add the outer ring. If the selection does not change which rings glow, the switch or the control for that element may have failed and should be tested.

JennAir gas stoves generally accept a propane conversion kit, which changes orifices and settings on each burner and the oven. The conversion should be done by a qualified technician and leak-tested afterward. The rating plate shows which gas the unit is set for. Running natural gas settings on propane causes large, sooty flames.

Glass ceramic tops resist heat well but can scratch from dragged cast iron, grit or abrasive cleaners. Lift pans rather than sliding them and use cleaners made for glass tops. Scratches are cosmetic, but chips and cracks are not. A crack through a heating zone means the top should be replaced before further use.

Clean the filter regularly and wipe the vent grille after cooking anything greasy. Do not pour liquid into the vent opening, and keep spills away from it when possible. If airflow drops even with a clean filter, grease may have reached the blower or duct, and those should be cleaned.
