What to know about Amana stoves

Amana stoves are freestanding gas and electric units built for heavy everyday use, and we see them constantly in rentals and apartment turnovers in the south and southwest valley. On gas models, the top burners take the most abuse: boil-overs wet the spark igniters, spills clog the burner ports, and the spark module can start clicking nonstop. On electric coil models, grease-loaded drip pans let heat and grime build up around the burner terminals. A stove visit covers each burner, the gas connection and shutoff behind the unit, the anti-tip bracket and a quick check of the oven.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Amana. If this stove is still under its factory warranty, contact Amana first.

Where Amana stoves usually fail

  • Gas top burner not lighting after a boil-over
  • Spark module clicking with every knob turned off
  • Grease-loaded drip pans overheating the coil terminals
  • Yellow, lazy burner flame from clogged ports
  • Stove pulled out without the anti-tip bracket reattached

Repairing Amana stoves in the Las Vegas Valley

An Amana stove gets used hard and cleaned fast. In many rentals it is the oldest appliance in the kitchen, and its burners take spills, boil-overs and heavy cookware every day. Most stove problems on these units are wear and contamination rather than design flaws, and a good cleaning is often part of the fix.

We focus on the top of the stove: burners or coils, ignition, switches and the supply behind the unit. If the oven also has problems, we check it on the same visit so the owner gets one complete picture rather than two separate calls. On gas units we also look at the flexible connector and shutoff, which are often original to the install.

Open and sealed gas burners

Older Amana gas stoves often have open burners with a drip tray underneath, and some use a standing pilot rather than spark ignition. Newer models use sealed burners with spark ignition. Each design fails differently.

On sealed burners, wet electrodes and clogged ports cause most complaints. On older open burners, pilot problems, clogged flash tubes and dirty burner heads are more common. We identify the design first and clean or replace the right parts.

Flame color and what it means

A healthy natural gas flame is mostly blue. Yellow tips can mean a misaligned cap, clogged ports or poor air mix. A flame that lifts off the burner or roars may have the wrong orifice or regulator setting, which sometimes happens after a conversion.

We inspect the burner, cap and orifice, and check the regulator if the whole stove shows the same flame problem.

Electric coil stoves

Coil elements plug into receptacles under the drip pans. Grease buildup, overheated pans and loose coils damage these connections. A coil that works only when wiggled is usually a receptacle problem.

Switch failure is the other common fault. A burner that stays on high or will not heat can point to the infinite switch behind the knob.

Tenant checks before a report

Tenants can reseat burner caps, dry wet burners, check the breaker and make sure the knobs are fully off. They should not remove panels, adjust gas parts or keep using a stove that smells of gas.

For landlords, we document what failed and why, including whether it was wear or damage. That helps with turnover planning and tenant communication.

When to repair and when to replace

Burner parts, receptacles, switches and igniters are inexpensive repairs. An Amana stove with rusted burner boxes, a failed oven and damaged controls may be better replaced, especially in a rental where reliability matters more than saving the old unit.

A yellow, floppy flame usually means the burner is not getting enough air, often because the ports are clogged with food or the cap is seated wrong. Clean the burner head and ports with a soft brush and let them dry. If the flame stays yellow, the air shutter or the gas setup may need adjustment, which a technician should handle.

Water from cleaning or a spill can short a spark switch behind a knob. Unplug the stove or turn off its breaker and let it dry for a day. If the clicking returns after it is dry, the switch or spark module needs to be replaced. Going forward, avoid spraying cleaner directly at the knobs.

Make sure the breaker has not tripped and, on gas models, that the stove is plugged in, because the igniters need power. Check that burner caps are seated correctly and dry. Note which burner fails and exactly what it does, such as clicking without lighting. Passing that detail along helps us bring the right parts to the visit.

Yes. They catch spills and reflect heat, and they also help protect the wiring below the burner. Pans coated in grease can smoke, and bent pans can keep the burner from seating firmly in its receptacle. Replace them when they are worn, and make sure each burner plugs in snugly and sits level.

Some older Amana gas stoves use standing pilots for the top burners. If a pilot goes out, the burners will not light. Relighting may be covered in the manual, but a pilot that keeps going out or a gas smell needs service. Newer models use electric spark ignition instead.

Yes, drip pans are a simple replacement on coil stoves when the stove is off and cool. Use the correct size for each burner. If the pan is badly burned or the receptacle under it is damaged, report it so the wiring can be checked.

Clean the burner ports and dry the area around the igniter. Make sure the cap is seated flat. A slow light can also come from a weak spark or a clogged orifice. If the burner still lights late or pops loudly, stop using it and book a repair.

It is worth doing soon. A cracked cap spreads gas unevenly, so the flame can burn tall on one side, scorch pans or fail to carry around the burner when it lights. Caps are inexpensive and model specific, so order by model number. The correct cap also sits at the right height over the igniter, which helps ignition.

Only after conversion. Natural gas and propane run at different pressures and need different burner orifices and a regulator change. Most valley homes are on natural gas, but some properties at the edges of town use propane tanks. A conversion should use the kit for your model, and the flames should be checked on every burner afterward.
