What to know about Maytag stoves

For many households, a Maytag stove means the freestanding gas or electric unit with burners on top and an oven below. The surface section is where most stove calls start: gas burners that will not ignite or keep sparking, electric coil or radiant elements that stop heating, worn burner knobs and switches, and cracked or loose surface grates. We also see stoves that tip forward because the anti-tip bracket was never installed. On a visit we test igniters, spark modules, elements and switches, check that the gas connection is secure, and confirm the anti-tip bracket is in place.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Maytag. If this stove is still under its factory warranty, contact Maytag first.

Where Maytag stoves usually fail

  • Burner sparks but the gas never catches and lights
  • Coil element dead even though it is seated correctly
  • Control knob spins freely or will not turn the burner
  • Stove rocks or tips forward without an anti-tip bracket
  • Gas smell near the stove when the burners are off

Repairing Maytag stoves in the Las Vegas Valley

When people say "stove", they usually mean the top of a freestanding unit, the part they use every day. On a Maytag, that might be four sealed gas burners with a center oval, open coil elements on an older electric model, or a smooth glass top. This page focuses on that surface and the controls that run it.

Older Maytag stoves are common in rentals and in the 1960s and 70s ranch homes of the central valley. Many still run well, and the surface parts they need are usually easy to find, which keeps repairs straightforward. Newer freestanding units are just as serviceable, though their glass tops and electronic switches need a little more care.

Gas burners and their ignition

On a gas Maytag stove, each knob both opens a valve and closes a small switch that fires the spark module. When the switch sticks, every burner clicks. When an electrode cracks or its wire chafes, one burner sparks weakly or not at all.

Older models may have standing pilots instead of spark ignition. A pilot that keeps going out is usually dirty or needs adjustment, which is a job for a technician because it involves the gas supply.

Electric coil and glass surfaces

Coil elements plug into receptacles that can burn and loosen over the years, so a coil that works only when wiggled points to the receptacle, not the coil. A coil that never heats needs testing with a meter along with its infinite switch.

On glass-top stoves, elements sit under the surface. One that heats only on high, or will not shut off, usually has a failed switch.

Before booking, and what not to do

Try swapping a coil element into a working position to see whether the fault follows the coil. Clean and dry gas burner caps and heads, and seat them flat. Check that the stove is plugged in and the breaker is on.

Turn off the breaker before swapping coils. Do not pull a gas stove away from the wall yourself. The flexible connector can kink or loosen, and a missing anti-tip bracket can let the unit tip.

Fixing it versus a new stove

Switches, receptacles, coils, igniters and knobs are inexpensive parts, so surface repairs nearly always make sense. We look at the whole unit while there, and if the oven half is in poor shape too, we give you that information so you can decide with the full picture. One price is quoted before any work.

If the smell is strong, leave the house and call the gas company from outside. For a faint smell, turn all burner knobs off, close the shutoff valve behind the stove, open windows, and avoid switching anything on. Do not try to find the leak with a flame. Once the area is safe, we can check the connector, valves and burners.

Swap the dead coil into a working socket of the same size. If it heats there, the original socket or the infinite switch is the problem. If it stays cold, the coil is burned out. Burned or loose terminals in the receptacle are common after years of use and can be replaced. Always turn off power before unplugging or handling coils.

Freestanding stoves can tip forward if weight is placed on an open oven door, which is especially dangerous with children around. The bracket anchors the rear leg to the floor or wall. Many stoves in rental homes and apartments were installed without one. We check for it on every visit and recommend installing it if it is missing.

Knobs are a simple replacement, and switches for electric stoves are generally modular parts that can be changed without major disassembly. Gas burner valves are more involved and must be leak-tested afterward. Before booking, check whether the knob's D-shaped shaft is stripped, because a cracked knob can feel like a broken valve.

On most Maytag gas stoves, all the igniters share one spark module, so every electrode sparks when any knob is turned to light. That is normal. It is only a problem if the clicking continues after the burner lights, or happens with all knobs off, which points to a stuck switch.

Uneven glow can mean part of the coil is failing. If you see a bright spot, a bulge or a split, stop using that element, because it can arc. Replacing the coil is simple, but check the receptacle too, since a burned receptacle can damage a new coil.

Often, yes. Pilot assemblies, thermocouples and burner parts are still available for many older models. We clean and adjust the pilots, check the gas pressure, and confirm the burners light cleanly. If a part is no longer made, we will tell you before any work begins.

Rings are usually burned-on residue or minerals from pots that boiled over, not damage. A ceramic cooktop cleaner and a razor scraper held flat often remove them. Marks that feel etched or pitted are permanent but harmless unless the glass is cracked. Avoid aluminum pans sliding across it, which can leave silver marks.

We focus on the problem you called about, but we can check the oven while we are there. If it has a fault too, we will explain it and quote it separately so you can decide. Many owners find it useful to know both halves are in order.
