What to know about Avanti stoves

Avanti stoves are mostly 20 and 24 inch apartment-size gas ranges, a common fixture in older apartment complexes, condos and rentals around the southwest valley. Their cooktops use open or sealed burners, sometimes with a standing pilot on older models and electronic spark ignition on newer ones. Typical complaints are burners that will not light, uneven or yellow flames, and pilots that keep going out. We check the gas supply and shutoff, the ignition system or pilot, the burner ports and the valves. Property managers often book these visits, and we give a clear diagnosis that is easy to pass along.

TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Avanti. If this stove is still under its factory warranty, contact Avanti first.

Where Avanti stoves usually fail

  • Standing pilot light going out on older models
  • Electronic igniter not sparking after a spill
  • Yellow, uneven flames from blocked burner ports
  • Burner valve knob stiff or turning without lighting
  • Gas smell near the stove that needs immediate attention

Repairing Avanti stoves in the Las Vegas Valley

Avanti stoves are compact freestanding units, usually 20 or 24 inches wide, and they turn up in older apartment complexes, condos, guest houses and rental casitas around the valley. When someone calls about the stove, they nearly always mean the cooktop: four burners or coils packed onto a surface much smaller than a standard range.

That tight layout concentrates heat and spills, so burner ports clog, electrodes foul and switches wear sooner than on a full-size unit. We test each burner or element, check the gas or electrical supply, and write the diagnosis in a way that a tenant, an owner and a property manager can all act on.

Pilot lights, spark ignition and flash tubes

Older or basic Avanti gas stoves may use a standing pilot in the middle of the cooktop, with flash tubes carrying gas from each burner to that flame. If a flash tube is knocked out of line or packed with grease, its burner will not catch even though the pilot is burning.

Newer models use electronic spark ignition, with a switch behind each knob and an electrode beside each burner. Constant clicking after cleaning is usually moisture in a switch, while silence from one burner points to a cracked electrode or a broken wire under the cooktop.

Coil cooktops on electric models

Electric Avanti stoves usually carry coil elements that plug into receptacles under the drip pans. On a small top, a boil-over from one pot can reach the receptacle of the next, which is why corroded terminals are common here.

A coil that heats only on high, flickers or arcs at the plug almost always needs a new receptacle along with the coil. Installing a new element into a burned receptacle tends to ruin the new element within weeks.

What a tenant or owner can check

On gas stoves, lift each burner head, confirm it is seated flat and brush out the ports with a soft brush. On coil stoves, swap a working coil into the dead position to see whether the problem follows the coil. Make sure the anti-tip bracket is installed, because small stoves are light and tip more easily.

If you smell gas, turn the knobs off, open windows and call the gas utility first. Do not keep relighting a pilot that refuses to stay lit.

Fix it or replace a compact stove

Coils, receptacles, igniters, electrodes and knobs are inexpensive and usually make sense on any Avanti stove. Burner valves and spark modules cost more, but they still tend to be worth replacing on a unit in good shape.

When an older stove has several worn parts, or parts for that model are no longer stocked, a new compact unit can be the better choice. Matching the width matters in small kitchens, so we confirm the measurements before recommending one.

A dirty or clogged pilot orifice, drafts from a nearby window or vent, and low gas flow are common causes. Grease buildup around the pilot is also typical. Relighting it repeatedly without finding the cause is not ideal. A technician can clean the pilot, adjust the flame and check for drafts and supply issues.

Ask tenants to report gas odors immediately, burners that will not light, flames that are mostly yellow, or knobs that turn freely without lighting. If they smell gas, they should leave and call the gas utility from outside. Early reports turn small fixes into small repairs instead of emergencies.

Many models can be converted with the correct orifices and regulator setting listed for the model, but most homes here use natural gas. If a stove was moved from a propane setup or converted in the past, the flame can be wrong. We check the orifices and flame when servicing the burners.

For common models, igniters, burners, knobs and valves are usually available. Some older or discontinued models have limited parts. We look up the exact model and serial number before ordering and let you know up front if something is hard to source, so you can decide whether to repair or replace.

Healthy flames are mostly blue with small, steady tips. Yellow, floppy flames usually mean the burner ports or the air opening are partly blocked by debris or grease. Clean the burner head and make sure it is assembled correctly. If the flames stay yellow, the orifice or gas pressure needs checking, since poor combustion can produce soot and carbon monoxide.

On stoves with spark ignition, the flame may be too weak to stay lit because of clogged ports or a misaligned cap. On models with a pilot and flash tubes, a misdirected tube can keep the burner from catching fully. Cleaning often solves it. If not, the valve or the gas supply should be checked by a technician.

Occasional ticking as the coil heats is normal. A sharp pop or visible spark at the coil or its plug is not. That usually means the coil has a weak spot or the receptacle is arcing. Turn off the breaker for the stove and stop using that burner until the coil and receptacle have been replaced.

With the stove off and cool, lift the coils out of their receptacles and remove the drip pans. Wash the pans in warm soapy water and let them dry. Avoid spraying cleaner into the receptacles. When reinstalling, push each coil firmly into place; a loose fit causes overheating at the terminals.

Yes, on most models the valves can be replaced individually. A valve that is stiff, leaks or will not hold a low flame should be changed rather than lubricated. We shut off the gas, replace the valve, and test the connection for leaks before the stove goes back into service.
