How a Repair Visit Works
What to know about Whirlpool stoves
When people call about a Whirlpool stove, they usually mean the cooktop surface of a freestanding range: four or five gas burners or electric coil and glass elements. On gas stoves the common jobs are clogged burner ports, igniters that will not spark and burner caps that sit crooked so flames are uneven. On electric coil models we replace worn coil elements and burned receptacle blocks, a frequent failure where the coil plugs in. Glass-top stoves need element and switch testing. We check every burner, the gas or electrical connection and the anti-tip bracket while we are there.
TrueFix Las Vegas is an independent repair company, not affiliated with Whirlpool. If this stove is still under its factory warranty, contact Whirlpool first.
Where Whirlpool stoves usually fail
- Coil element receptacle burns and the burner works intermittently
- Gas burner ports clog with grease and flame burns unevenly
- Burner igniter will not spark after a boil-over
- Misaligned burner caps cause yellow or lifting flames
- Glass-top element switch sticks on high and overheats pans

Repairing Whirlpool stoves in the Las Vegas Valley
Most of the Whirlpool stoves we see are the everyday freestanding kind found in tract homes and rentals in the neighborhoods we serve, with either coil elements, a smooth glass top or four or five sealed gas burners. Their simplicity is a strength. Stovetop problems tend to have clear causes, and parts are easy to get.
The trick is separating what is wrong with the burner itself from what is wrong with its supply. A coil that does not heat might be the coil, the receptacle it plugs into, the switch or the wiring between them. We test in that order so you only pay for the part that failed.
Coil and glass-top stoves
Coil elements plug into a receptacle mounted below the drip pan. Over time, heat and spills can oxidize the contacts until the connection overheats. Replacing a coil without replacing a burned receptacle usually means the new coil fails too.
On smooth glass tops, elements are wired directly and controlled by an infinite switch or electronic control. A zone that will not turn off, or only works on high, generally points to the switch rather than the element.
Gas stovetop issues
Gas burners light with a spark from an electrode next to the burner head. Grease buildup or a cracked electrode weakens the spark, while clogged ports leave gaps in the flame. A flame that is yellow, lifting or noisy may also mean the cap is off-center.
We clean ports, check spark strength and confirm the regulator is set for the correct fuel. On older homes, we also make sure the gas connector and shutoff valve are in good condition.
Owner checks and safety
Swap a coil into a different position to see whether the problem follows the coil or stays with the position. On gas, remove the cap and head to clear spills, let everything dry, and reassemble with the cap seated flat.
Turn off power at the breaker before removing drip pans or anything below them. Never use a stove that smells of gas, and keep the anti-tip bracket attached after cleaning behind it.
Is a Whirlpool stove worth fixing?
Coils, receptacles, switches and igniters are modest repairs with common parts, and they are usually worth doing. A stove repair also gives us a chance to check the oven below and the gas or power connection.
If the stovetop is rusted through, the oven has also failed, or the control is obsolete, replacement may be the better value. We will tell you once the diagnosis is complete.

That usually means the receptacle the coil plugs into is burned or loose, or the coil terminals are pitted. Turn off the breaker before touching it. Swapping coils between burners can show whether the element or the receptacle is the problem. A burned receptacle should be replaced along with the coil to prevent arcing.
Yellow, lazy flames can come from a burner cap that is not seated, clogged ports or debris in the burner. Let the stove cool, remove and clean the caps and heads, dry them completely and reseat them. If flames stay yellow on every burner, or you smell gas, shut off the gas and have the stove checked.
Lighting a gas burner manually with a long lighter is a common workaround, but if the burner does not light within a few seconds, turn it off and let the gas clear. Do not do this if you smell gas. A dead igniter is often a dirty or wet electrode, or a spark switch or module failure we can test.
Yes. Freestanding ranges can tip forward if weight is placed on an open oven door, especially with a child on it. The bracket anchors a rear leg to the floor or wall. Many older installations skipped it, so we check for it during any stove visit and can install one if it is missing.
If a coil only works at high, or cycles erratically regardless of the knob, the infinite switch is the usual suspect. These switches wear and can stick. It is a common and practical repair. Test by moving the coil to a known good position first. If the problem stays with the knob, the switch is likely at fault.
Yes, with the stove off and cool. Coils lift and unplug from their receptacle. Look closely at the receptacle: if the terminals are discolored, pitted or melted, replace it too, because a burned receptacle will damage a new coil. If you are not comfortable with wiring, we can do it.
Popping as a burner lights or turns off can come from clogged ports, a misaligned cap, or gas lighting late. A soft pop is common. Loud pops or flames rolling out of the burner are not normal. Clean and dry the burner. If it continues, we can check the burner, igniter and gas pressure.
Use a cooktop cleaner and a razor scraper held at a low angle for stuck-on food. Avoid abrasive pads, oven cleaner and cleaning while the surface is hot. Wipe up sugary spills quickly, because sugar can pit the glass as it cools.
Turn off the circuit breaker for the stove right away, and do not use it until it is checked. A burner that stays on with the knob off usually has a failed infinite switch or control relay. This is a safety issue rather than an inconvenience, and it should be repaired before the stove is used again.
